POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general direction from the Graduate Division Dean and Assistant Dean, the Graduate Student Professional Development Program Director will have primary responsibility for providing the vision, strategic planning, and leadership for a campus-wide program focused on the professional development of graduate students leading to careers both within and outside of academia. The Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining a co-curricular professional development curriculum that follows the graduate student lifecycle and actively engages graduate students throughout their enrollment at UCSB. The professional development program will provide graduate students with the key skills they need before completing their degrees. These include communication, academic development, leadership and professionalism, career preparation, and other metaprofessional skills.
The Director manages the daily operations of the Graduate Student Resource Center (GSRC) from which professional activities are coordinated. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, the Director also oversees the operation of the UCSB GradPost (online information blog for graduate students), develops a comprehensive annual budget for the Career & Professional Development unit, and drafts an annual report for submission to the Graduate Dean. This position includes the possibility of teaching a graduate course in professional development.
The Director is responsible for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of an Assistant Director, 4 graduate student peer advisors who focus on specific support areas (funding, professional development, and international graduate students), and an undergraduate assistant. Additionally, the Director provides support and coordination of services with other personnel in the GSRC, including a Graduate Career Counselor and 3 other graduate student peer advisors, in collaboration with campus partners (e.g. Career Services; Graduate Division's Admissions, Diversity, & Outreach unit). The Director fosters a working environment which promotes enthusiasm for meeting the objectives of the GSRC. The Director also facilitates productive collaborations across campus that promote graduate student professional development and serves as an advocate for graduate student needs.
On behalf of the Dean, the Director manages other major activities and events that support the successful professional and academic development of graduate students including: Annual major Graduate Division activities including New Graduate Student Orientation, Grad Slam, Beyond Academia student organization events, and other special events; as well as the campus response to calls for graduate student proposals to extramural funding agencies (e.g., the Fulbright U.S. Student Program). QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application):
Masters degree in any discipline.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start):
1+ years experience developing and facilitating programming for graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines and backgrounds.
Preferred qualifications:
- Ph.D. in any discipline.
- Experience leading a collaborative team to support graduate and professional degree students in a large, diverse university environment.
- Ability to recruit, train, and supervise professional staff and student assistants.
- Ability to develop, assess, and adjust services and programs independently and through campus partnerships.
- Ability to work confidently with diverse student populations and commitment to practicing and promoting inclusivity.
- Experience developing and managing budgets as well as space, equipment, and material resources. Ability to design and utilize budget reports.
- Exceptional organizational, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to independently prioritize tasks and organize workload to accomplish established objectives and assignments with minimal direction.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills.
