JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the laboratory Supervisor and while carrying out a variety of complex procedures involving considerable independent judgment, performs chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic or specialized tests to provide data for use in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases. Performs the required tests according to the established procedures and methodologies.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Receives specimens from doctors, laboratories, hospitals or directly from patients and performs complex quantitative analyses.
- Completes reports for the test performed and ensures that quality control criteria are met before reports are issued.
- Assumes responsibility for keeping their work area clean and neat at all times and for cleaning at the end of each day's work.
- May be required to advise and assist in the training of other personnel.
- May be required to troubleshoot any or all automatic, semi-automatic or manual equipment within the laboratory and ensure that the equipment is in working order.
- May assist in the evaluation of new or modified techniques.
- May be required to attend meetings as directed.
- May be required to prepare chemical reagents and stains in performing tests.
- Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES
- Registration as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MT ASCP) or equivalent experience.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or a Bachelor’s Degree in the biological sciences and completion of an A.M.A. approved Medical Technology Program, which would provide an understanding of clinical tests and standards and applicable procedures/techniques or equivalent experience.
- The manual dexterity and visual acuity to prepare specimen and solutions and microscopically screen specimens.
- The analytical ability to interpret and analyze test results, perform calculations and calibrate instruments.
- The technical expertise to operate all equipment and to perform routine and advanced clinical diagnostic testing procedures.
