Job Summary:
The Social Service Specialist provides an array of social services to clients, and residents of Star of Hope with assistance in managing difficult life circumstances, such as poverty, illness, disability or other issues. The Social Services Specialist triages the needs of the residents, clients, neighbors and develops action plans, research assistance programs such as Medicaid/Medicare, Social Security, VA benefits, SNAP benefits.
Job Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct a needs assessment on individuals referred to them by SOH staff. Provide social services assistance to clients, and residents of Star of Hope Mission to include but not limited to social security benefits, TANF, SNAP benefits, referrals for independent housing, WIC, ECI services, guardianship, disability services, etc. Researching assistance programs and helping client’s complete paperwork.
  2. Engage and develop relationships with agencies in and around the city who may be interested in partnering with Star of Hope Mission in providing services to our residents and clients. This includes researching and making for physically disabled, dementia care, and make onsite inspections of transitional living and housing partners.
  3. Provide a monthly report highlighting the contacts made and services provided on behalf of individuals seeking services. monthly hours of all interns at Star of Hope. Report numbers monthly to the Manager of Resident Services II and the Senior Director of MDC.
  4. Follow up with residents/clients to make sure that they are getting the supportive services that they need.
  5. Documents case activities within time frames established by policy.
  6. Transport residents in and around the county for appointments as necessary in company vehicle.
  7. Create unique opportunities for the student interns to gain experience in social services in a social service agency. This experience should also benefit Star of Hope mission and/or its residents/clients. Visit and physically check in with them regularly.
  8. Coordinate and conduct quarterly community resource fairs for residents and clients.
Other Job Responsibilities:
  1. Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
  2. Other duties as assigned.
  3. Check for accuracy of the hours noted by the student and those recorded in volunteer services database.

Qualifications:
Education, Skills & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in social work required. Two years’ experience in working in a social service agency. Experience working with interns and school/universities who are looking for placement of their interns. Experience working with individuals who are experiencing homelessness, substance use, generational poverty, etc.
Good reading, writing, time management skills and the ability to multitask. Ability to meet program schedules, goals and objectives. Good organization and follow-up skills. Service–oriented attitude and tenacity to meet commitments. Good judgment in dealing with confidential resident/client and intern information and setting priorities. Capable of coordinating detailed work and issues that need immediate attention. Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with employees, managers, directors, residents/clients, volunteers, and outside organizations that interact with Star of Hope. Experience working under stressful conditions and use to dealing with constant interruptions.
A valid state driver’s license and vehicle insurance is required.
Be able to work respectfully, professionally and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required client/staff boundaries and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women, and children.
Equipment Used: General Office Supplies (Calculator, Telephone, Stapler, etc.), Computer Equipment (Monitor, Keyboard, etc.), Copier/Fax/Printer, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 15-passenger van.
Work Environment: Normal business hours, office environment, occasional weekend or evening events. Frequent visits with clients at program sites are required. Work schedule may be subject to change to meet the business needs of the mission. Professional dress. Jeans with no holes/fraying may only be worn on Fridays and only as long as a Star of Hope shirt (T-shirt, polo-style or sweatshirt) is worn. Exposure to infectious diseases, poor hygiene, drug usage, verbal and physical abuse and other emergency situations relative to the homeless population is normal.
Relations with Others: Constant contact with immediate peers, staff, residents/clients, and managers. Constant face to face discussions with individuals, electronic mail, written letters and memos. Frequent contact with peers in other departments and vendors. Frequent telephone conversation. Occasional contact with residents/clients and volunteers.
Physical Requirements: Light work with lifting to 10 pounds. Constant sitting, use of fingers, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Frequent standing, walking, and feeling. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, handling and driving. Constant contact vision at 20 inches or less, and constant color vision and depth perception.
