The Section of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine has a proud and long history of excellence in advancing cancer care through basic and translational discovery.
Job Summary
The Research Professional will lead cancer immunology projects in the Sweis laboratory (sweislab.org). The laboratory is investigating mechanisms of cancer immunotherapy resistance, through the use of cutting-edge bladder cancer and skin cancer model systems. The position requires the ability to perform tasks independently and lead small groups within the lab on projects. Collaborations with other laboratories and investigators within the Section and Department are routine.
With respect to laboratory technical skills, the individual must be proficient in cell/tissue culture, flow cytometry/sorting (FACS), protein isolation and analysis (western blot, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry), RNA isolation and analysis by qRT-PCR, molecular biology (PCR, genotyping, cloning plasmid constructs, DNA isolation and sequencing analysis, CRISPR). Knowledge of cancer immunology and advanced experimental techniques such as single cell RNAseq or special transcriptomics is preferred. The individual must be comfortable with mouse modeling (husbandry/breeding, genotyping, surgical procedures, drug administration by oral gavage, intraperitoneal and tail vein injection harvest, protein, RNA and immunohistochemical analysis).
The professional will also be expected to train new members of the laboratory. Finally, the candidate will be expected to generate manuscripts, formulate grant proposals, and present research at major conferences.
Responsibilities
- Molecular biology - PCR, genotyping, cloning plasmid constructs, DNA isolation and sequencing analysis.
- Cell culture - in vitro experiments, retroviral transductions, CRISPR.
- Mouse work – maintenance of colonies, running experiments in mice.
- Immunoassays: Flow cytometry (FACS), ELISPOT, ELISA.
- Advanced experimental techniques (single cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics).
- Collate and analyze data.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date and well-documented records of procedures performed and data generated.
- Summarize results, assist in interpreting findings, and generate manuscripts and grants.
- Instruct new personnel including technologists, residents, medical students, or fellows.
- Collaborate on the development of new research projects with academic and community-based organizations.
- May present work at scientific meetings.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Minimum requirements include a PhD in a related field.
Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Cancer Biology or Cancer Immunology or related discipline.
- Prior biology/immunology laboratory experience.
