Position Overview:

The Program Director for Employer Relations will support the Associate Director of Employer Relations and Operations to deploy a comprehensive employer engagement strategy across a variety of corporate, non-profit, and governmental organizations with the goal of building strong relationships that encourage employer partners to bring internships and job opportunities to Carleton College.

The program director will collaborate with internal and external constituencies to build and maintain high volume recruiting pipelines across industries, with a specific emphasis on supporting students from historically underrepresented populations. Additionally, the Program Director for Employer Relations will promote the value of a liberal arts education to external partners and campus constituents.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Employer Management (60%)

  1. Coordinate and elevate partnerships with a range of industries to provide experiential learning, internships, part- and full-time employment opportunities for Carleton students and alumni.
  2. Develop employment pipelines and cultivate enduring relationships with priority employers to encourage student engagement with targeted employers and organizations, consistent with Carleton’s values.
  3. Work closely with Career Center colleagues, traveling as needed, to build relationships with alumni and parents to better utilize connections in recruiting and networking.
  4. Collaborate with the Career Center colleagues to recruit support for the Carleton Externship program, including recruiting externship hosts and posting externship opportunities to solicit student applications.
  5. Identify partnerships with key external organizations to develop recruitment pipelines for students in priority student demographic and interest areas.
  6. Manage select career development programs for students, including site visits to employers, career fair activities, skills-based workshops, and emerging recruiting practices.
  7. Collaborate with the Career Center communications staff to promote externships, internships, volunteerism, and job opportunities to students.
  8. In collaboration with the Associate Director for Employer Relations and Operations, review and update recruiting program policies and procedures to be consistent with the evolving legal and business environments.
  9. Lead efforts to connect students with industry partners including employers, graduate schools, alumni, parents, and friends of the college with selected career communities (e.g., Business, Finance, and Consulting; Data, Technology, and Entrepreneurism; Law and Advocacy).
  10. Strategically adapt Carleton’s employer recruiting efforts based on current trends and anticipated needs of students, and provide employer and industry insights to the Career Center staff and college overall.
  11. Advise students on essential career development skills related to the employer engagement program, including but not limited to the negotiating offers, overall ethical/professional conduct, résumé/cover letter writing, informational interviewing, interview preparation, time management, and interview cancellations, and strategies for utilizing the Career Center job board.

Career Center Technology and Promotion of Career Opportunities (40%)

  1. Collaborate with the employer relations team to maintain Handshake, Interstride, GoinGlobal or other similar student information systems or job platforms as team needs evolve. Oversee the implementation and utilization of the career services management platform in coordination with the Recruiting Program Coordinator.
  2. Provide direction and oversight of administrative and student staff to ensure appropriate and efficient delivery of recruiting services.
  3. Develop and improve upon the marketing of employment opportunities and recruiting activities to students on campus with attention to student development and evolving marketing practices.
  4. Maintain integrity of data collection and integration processes between Handshake and related Carleton systems.
  5. Support collection and reporting of First Destination Survey data.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

This position will report to the Associate Director of Employer Relations and Operations and will work closely with the Recruiting Program Coordinator. The position may supervise student staff to manage recruiting functions in the office.

Education/Experience/Skills (supported by job duties):

Required:

  1. Master’s Degree.
  2. 3 years of relevant experience in higher education, human resources, sales and/or recruiting.
  3. Outstanding interpersonal skills including networking and relationship management, particularly with external constituencies.
  4. Ability to exercise independent judgment and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Possess a dynamic, professional demeanor with a motivated and enthusiastic work style.
  6. Flexibility and capacity to conduct evening and weekend programs and events, especially activities including travel.
  7. Computer skills, including familiarity with online recruiting technology, CRM, or career services management systems.
  8. A deep interest in a liberal arts education and commitment to student life and learning.

Preferred:

  1. 5 years of experience in a related field, including sales, human resources, higher education, or recruiting.
  2. Experience working in a college/university recruiting environment.
  3. Computer skills including familiarity with online recruiting technology and career services management systems, particularly Handshake.
