Description
Under the direction of a Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse, the medical assistant provides direct patient care and assists other healthcare professionals in examining and treating patients. The medical assistant is clinically knowledgeable about practices, protocols, procedures, and paper flow. The medical assistant works collaboratively with other disciplines to ensure an integrated approach to patient care and maintains constant communication among the members of the health care team.

Administrative Duties:
  • Transition of Care(TOC): Coordinate and manage patient transitions of care, ensuring seamless communication between healthcare providers and patients. Track and follow up on patient progress and care plans.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Coverage: Assist with the authorization and procurement of DME, including preparing necessary documentation, verifying insurance coverage, and liaising with suppliers and patients.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, including updating electronic health records (EHR) and handling medical correspondence. Performs inventory of paper supplies and patient forms. Assists in keeping nursing stations and clinic neat and clean, retrieving medical records if needed, and other duties as assigned.
  • Scheduling: Schedule patient appointments, tests, and procedures. Coordinate with various departments to ensure timely and efficient care delivery.
  • Insurance and Billing: Verify patient insurance information, assist with billing inquiries, and ensure proper coding for services rendered.
Clinical Duties:
  • Clinical Support: Assist in various clinical settings by performing vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, assisting with minor procedures as directed by healthcare providers, preparing patients for examinations, such as pap smears, ear irrigation, vision/hearing tests, simple dressing change, 12-lead EKG; specimen collection, including simple wave testing; CPR and equipment preparation. Maintains infection control practice at all times, especially with patients requiring isolation/reverse precautions.
  • Patient Education: Provide patients with information about their conditions, treatments, and preventive care. Answer patient queries and offer support to enhance their understanding and compliance.
  • Assisting Providers: Support physicians and other healthcare professionals with patient care activities. Takes accurate and complete telephone messages for providers and answers calls according to telephone protocols.
Qualifications & Certificates:
  • Medical Assisting Certificate
  • Current BLS/CPR Certificate
  • Minimum of one year in an ambulatory or outpatient setting required
  • Experience working with adults and children required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Frequent standing and walking for up to 80% of the work day or shift.
  2. Some lifting, pushing or pulling required up to 30 pounds.
  3. Ability to see and distinguish color.
  4. Ability to perform CPR (chest compressions).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Frequent contact with patients, families, visitors, nurses and other department staff. Occasional requests to change work areas to cover another priority area to meet patient needs. Occasional stress and pressure caused by multiple simultaneous demands. May be exposed to various body fluids and/or infectious diseases. Universal precautions and techniques are included in orientation and the availability of protective wear is supported and encouraged when the employee is at risk for exposure.
