The Sport Management program at California Lutheran University is one of the fastest growing majors and is in the top five in overall undergraduate enrollment for the 2023/2024 academic year. In addition, it is one of five California Sports Management programs housed in a business/management school, and possesses the highest ranking amongst these institutions.
According to Marketcast research, over 2,000 senior level sport executives expressed that the most important factor in selecting a Sport Management program is that it’s part of a business/management school. Moreover, California Lutheran University is well-positioned in the Los Angeles and California regional market with solidified partnerships with the Los Angeles Rams, Angel City FC, and the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission to name a few. These unique partnerships provide exceptional experiential learning opportunities of site visits, mentorship, and exclusive internship/volunteer opportunities direct to our student population. Also, the program offers a specialized curriculum with hands-on applicable projects with surrounding sport organizations via consultancy projects and student business proposal competitions, enhancing their preparedness as the next wave of aspiring sport professionals.
Basic Function
Under the direction of the Dean and the Associate Dean, the Assistant Professor or Lecturer is responsible for providing academic instruction to students for the assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses. The Assistant Professor or Lecturer is to serve as an academic mentor to students; serve on faculty or university committees. The Assistant Professor must engage in scholarly activities and/or creative endeavors. Furthermore, the newly hired Sports Management faculty member is expected to contribute and support the vision for the program particularly towards creating innovative curricula, serving student needs towards professional development, being on par with program grading expectations, as well as being a team player towards program needs that include, but are not limited to: event promotion, club involvement, cross-course afforded opportunities, meetings, building and maintaining industry relationships, and positive leadership scholarship.
Representative Duties
- Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching Sports Management courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. 24 units for Assistant Professor, Lecturer for 24 or 32 units/year: E
- Within that context, the expectation is to design creative assignments and activities in one-on-one and classroom instructional settings to foster hands-on, active learning in students that will develop their expertise in the subject matter. E
- Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback promptly to student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours. E
- Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum; prepare and submit grades, data, and reports related to the course and student progress promptly. E
- Provide a course syllabus to students in each class within the first week of the class, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
- Adhere to the responsibilities related to teaching, advising and service as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
- Attend and participate in committees and meetings. E
- Participate in marketing and recruiting for the program. E
- Evening and weekend hours may be required in part of experiential learning components. E
- Perform related duties as assigned. E
- Adhere to the responsibilities related to teaching, advising, service, and scholarly, professional, and creative activities, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
- Maintain an active research program that involves undergraduates in mentored research for Assistant Professor. E
- Sports Management education techniques, such as Case Studies, Situational Analysis Projects, Marketing and Business Proposals, and Design Thinking.

For the Lecturer position, obtainment of a Master’s Degree and for Assistant Professor, obtainment of a Doctoral Degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in Sports Management or a closely related field.
ABD will also be accepted with a set date for when the degree will be earned. Please note that ABD would come in at the Instructor level.
Either proven or presumptive potential for successfully teaching Sports Management.
Either proven or presumptive potential for satisfactorily fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a faculty member and for making significant contributions to the University community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some relative work experience in the Sports Management field, which could include business operations, sport agencies, media programming, sales, facilities management, event coordination, marketing direction, player operations, among others.
- A research, service, and or creative activities focus towards current trends in sports business (e.g., technological integrations, fan engagement strategies, sport tourism, sport betting and gambling, sustainability innovation, visibility, participation, and investment in women’s sports, among others).
- Experience collaborating with sport industry professionals in teaching, research, and or professional networks.
- Experience working with diverse populations and ability to adapt and lead various learning modalities.
