JOB TITLE:

Program Director

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Nebraska Writers Collective fosters personal empowerment and community-building in the Midwest through creative writing and performance poetry working primarily in high schools, middle schools, and places of incarceration across Nebraska and Iowa. The Program Director is responsible for overseeing all NWC programs, including All Writes Reserved, Collective For Youth, Nebraska Youth Poet Laureate Program, Visiting Writers Series, North Omaha Writers Workshop, The Generator, Writers’ Block, and NWC Press. This position will have 3 direct reports.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Outreach, Engagement, Partnerships 45%

  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, arts agencies, for-profit institutions across all NWC programs.
  • Engage with Core Teaching Artists and Teaching Artists placed in schools and community sites across Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.
  • Work alongside Co-Executive Directors to determine for-profit programmatic sponsors and private foundations/donors to chair events/readings/talks.
  • Attend events/conferences hosted by community partners to network, engage, and connect with leaders across Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

Administrative Duties 30%

  • Oversee all publications produced by NWC Press and Copy Editor.
  • Oversee Writers’ Block Program Coordinator, meeting with Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and community partners as needed.
  • Oversee work completed by All Writes Reserved Program Coordinator(s) to ensure smooth program delivery across a variety of school/community sites.
  • Work alongside Co-Executive Directors to create data-driven presentations and decks for donors and potential program sponsors.
  • Annually revise program maps, logic models, and evaluation tools used for effective program development/management.

Event Coordination: 25%

  • Responsible for large-scale event planning (Nebraska Youth Poet Laureate Ceremony, All Writes Reserved Youth Spoken Word Festival, donor events, etc.)
  • Communicating with community partners for Writers In Community (one-time events and workshops throughout the 2024-2025 program year by partner requests).
  • Coordinate vendors for all NWC events, including photographers, videographers, livestream professionals, ASL interpretation, etc.
  • Tour all programmatic venues prior to booking, ensuring accessibility and that all event needs can be met by the venue support team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has 3 direct reports:

  1. NWC Press and Copy Editor
  2. Writers’ Block Program Coordinator
  3. All Writes Reserved Program Coordinator.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Timely submission of corporate card expenses
  • Partnering with Co-Executive Directors on annual programmatic budget

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Education, Communication, or another transferable field preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES:

Valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance certificate for NE liability coverage.

OTHER SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Non-profit program management experience is beneficial and preferred.
  • Analytical ability thrives on input and has a learner mindset that drives curiosity.
  • High achiever, intrinsically motivated to manage time wisely and meet ongoing deadlines.
  • Proven experience with program building and budget management is preferred.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills with diverse audiences allows necessary connections with internal and external teams.

  • Proven independent creative abilities enable individual impact and effective leadership for the team.
  • Strategic problem-solving skills are important for navigating challenges.

  • Independent mobility is necessary for travel to NWC offices (University of Nebraska-Omaha) and other assigned locations.
  • Data-driven to conduct research, compile, and analyze data allows for continuous program improvement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
  • Frequently operating a motor vehicle with use of upper body strength.
  • Required use of upper body strength to lift, pull and push up to 20 pounds on occasion.
  • Rarely moving up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Exposure to high temperatures and environmental conditions during travel.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
