Position Summary:

The Accountant at Mary Crane plays a pivotal role in overseeing comprehensive accounting functions for the Center. This position involves handling diverse responsibilities, including processing payroll, managing contributions, preparing financial statements, and ensuring compliance with government regulations and agency requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Process weekly payroll efficiently.

  • Manage Mutual of America contributions with precision.

  • Process 1099s and submit monthly DFSS vouchers.

  • Generate AFC billings and review ISBE vouchers.

  • Analyze and compile AFC reports on a monthly basis.

  • Handle Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Receipts.

  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile bank accounts.

  • Conduct thorough analysis of credit card activities.

  • Prepare audit documents and maintain various monthly reports.

  • Provide training and technical assistance to accounting assistants.

  • Develop and prepare specialized accounting reports.

  • Maintain organized files for all government funding programs.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Operations and Senior Accountant.

  • Assist in various document preparations and support Administrative Operations functions.

  • Undertake special projects as required.

  • Attend meetings and training activities on behalf of the Center.

Job Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

  • B.A. degree in accounting or a related business field with a minimum of 15 semester hours in Accounting.

  • Two years of progressively responsible accounting experience.

  • A total of at least five years of relevant experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computerized accounting systems.

Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of modern accounting theory, principles, and practices.

  • Analytical skills in financial transactions and record-keeping.

  • Confidentiality maintenance and excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Detail-oriented with a logical and methodological problem-solving approach.

  • Flexibility to thrive in a demanding, stressful environment.

  • Proficiency in word processing and effective cooperation as a team member.

Language Skills:

  • Proficient in reading and speaking English.

  • Physical Demands:

  • Regular talking, hearing, and visual acuity.

  • Occasional standing, walking, sitting, handling, and lifting (up to 30 pounds).

  • Fine hand manipulation (keyboard skills).

  • Potential for occasional work beyond 40 hours per week due to job demands.
