Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Innovator in Residence for the William S. Richardson School of Law, a consultative and technical expert in legal technology.
  • Develop and implement new innovative and technology-based initiatives at William S. Richardson School of Law.
  • Work closely with the IT department to implement solutions.
  • Assist staff and faculty with legal technology-based questions and projects.
  • Recommend specialized areas and topics in legal technology for inclusion into the law school curriculum.
  • Support students in developing their technological competencies in accordance with national and local rules of professional conduct.
  • Work with key stakeholders in the legal community (Courts, Law Firms, Bar Association) on legal technology projects.
  • Build software to help address issues staff, faculty, and students encounter.
  • Design and demonstrate innovation and technology-related classes at the law school (Coding for Lawyers, Cybersecurity Law, etc.).
  • Develop innovation and technology-related continued learning education (CLE) classes.
  • Speak at legal conferences on the intersection of law and technology.
  • Identify areas within the law school that could be improved with technology.
  • Work within the University of Hawaii system to get approvals and resources for different projects.
  • Keep current on developments in the legal technology sector.
  • Work closely with the Dean on a project basis to execute legal technology initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in political science, computer science, information technology, or related field and 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience in legal technology; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in legal technology.
  • Considerable understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories associated with legal technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex problems through creative reasoning and logic.
  • Ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software; knowledge of Python, JavaScript, and database management software.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working with students, faculty, and administrators in higher education.
  • Full stack development experience with Python, website creation, database management, AWS, JavaScript, web scraping, server management, and chrome extensions.
  • Solid understanding of Artificial Intelligence and ability to use generative A.I. APIs.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Admitted to at least one State Bar.
  • Prior experience working on Access to Justice issues.
  • Prior experience working with non-profit legal aid organizations.
