Meritus Health seeks an experienced Associate General Counsel to join our legal team. This role will primarily assist with risk management, general legal matters, and contract management, working closely with the General Counsel to ensure legal compliance and protect the organization's interests as we continue to grow and innovate.

Responsibilities

  1. Risk Management: Working collaboratively with the General Counsel. Assist in discovery processes for legal proceedings. Participate in mediations and claims handled in-house. Direct and coordinate with outside counsel on various legal matters. Manage insurance claims and subpoenas.
  2. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies. Provide education to staff on legal and risk management topics. Participate in risk assessments as assigned. Support incident investigations.
  3. General Legal Matters: Provide legal advice on a wide range of issues affecting the healthcare organization. Draft and review legal documents and correspondence. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Conduct legal research. Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Assist with legal matters related to the affiliated medical school, including student affairs, faculty matters, and educational program compliance.
  4. Draft, review, and negotiate various contracts and agreements. Ensure all contracts comply with applicable laws and regulations. Assist with oversight of contract database management with paralegal administrative support. Advise on contract-related disputes and resolutions. Collaborate with departments to streamline contract processes and improve efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school in the United States.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare law, preferably in a hospital or healthcare system setting. Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, Stark Law, and Anti-Kickback Statute. Experience in risk management and contract law.

Licensure/Certification: Licensed to practice law in Maryland.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Strong legal research and analytical skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize workload, ability to work independently, collaboratively and effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills that would enable the individual to successfully interact with senior leadership, physicians, staff at all levels, regulators, and the community. Strong organizational and time management skills.
