Department Summary
SJSU's Department of Urban and Regional Planning, founded in 1970, includes an interdisciplinary and highly research-active team of scholars and engaged practitioners. The department prepares planning professionals who can affect transformative change and create just, sustainable, and vibrant communities. The department is in a growing and building phase, as it has recently expanded to include the Geography program. Degrees offered include: a bachelor's and master's degree in Geography, a GIS Minor, a Geography Minor, an Urban Studies Minor, a Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning (accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board), and graduate certificate programs, including an advanced certificate program in Geographic Information Science.
Brief Description of Duties
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning seeks candidates for part-time lecturer instructional positions to teach introductory lower division courses as well as upper division courses in different aspects of urban planning and geography.
- Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity - including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
- Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Urban Planning/Geography or a closely related discipline.
- Professional experience in addition to a Master's degree and previous teaching experience at the collegiate level will be highly valued.
- Applicants must be able to prepare and deliver lectures in a conventional (in class) or online modalities.
- Applicants must be well organized and able to deliver a supportive learning experience for our highly diverse student body.
- AICP and/or GISP certification is highly recommended.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Urban Planning/Geography or a closely related discipline.
Compensation
Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary:
L-A / - $4530 - $5300
L-B / - $5405 - $6300
L-C / - $6190 - $6800
L-D / - $7794 - $8250
Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty - part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate x 12).
