Position Summary & Responsibilities

The position (K0235299)
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Data Compliance & Registration Specialist opening in Topeka. This position is with the Office of Vital Statistics and will have a hybrid schedule. The incumbent in this roll is responsible for learning and understanding death coding process per NCHS guidelines. This may require off site training and potential certification.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Review and consult with medical certifiers (physicians and coroners) to ensure sensitive medical data (cause of death) is in compliance by analyzing and interpreting cause listed on death certificates. Determine if the medical certifier on death certificate is the appropriate certifier and has the authority to certify death certificates. Analyze, determine, and identify whether the medical data reported needs further data collected or should be rejected. Query multiple sources (medical certifier, the Office of Traffic Safety, medical personnel, and law enforcement) to obtain additional data for cause by phone or in writing. Take appropriate required action based on knowledge regarding rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for filing vital events. Confer and provide guidance to medical certifier who may not understand how to classify cause of death properly by discussing the differences between immediate cause and underlying cause of death.
Query various sources such as funeral directors, physicians, coroners, law enforcement, medical personnel, in writing and by phone to obtain additional confidential facts and sensitive cause of death data. Interpret and enter complex medical data into the electronic death registration system and review and accept electronic death records to establish registered records. Complete data that has been left blank, search internet to obtain complete description of medical condition and correct spelling errors as necessary to ensure the record is accurate and complete. Confer and provide guidance to medical certifiers who may not understand how to classify cause of death properly by discussing the difference between immediate cause and underlying cause of death. Assign state file number (sfn) and bar code; print death record to be scanned into imaging system and prepare record for off-site storage.

Qualifications
- Education :
- High School, GED
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in general office, clerical and administrative support work.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with confidential information.
- Apply analytical thinking to specific problems.
- Experience in customer service.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong, effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organization skills.
- Read and comprehend technical narrative material, including statutes and regulations.
