A few years ago, we began our journey to transform our approach to data and analytics from a batch-centric platform with siloed data marts to our Nordstrom Analytical Platform (NAP), a real-time, event-streaming-centric, analytical platform that provides high-quality, pre-stitched 360 views of our customers, products, inventory, customer service, fulfillment/logistics, and credit. The Nordstrom data team designs, develops, and maintains software applications and services that support all of the Data Engineering and Analytics business needs to drive the Nordstrom Omni channel experiences. This opportunity also provides various avenues to collaborate and influence several other platforms within Nordstrom Technology and has a company-wide impact – both business and engineering. Data Analytics is a strategic focus area for the company.

As a Data Engineer 2, you will be working on delivering the strategic vision of critical Item and assortment planning processes with a near-real-time data platform. You will be a key part of our Nordstrom Technology team that applies scientific, mathematical, and social principles to design, build, and maintain technology products, devices, systems, and solutions. These technology products and solutions provide amazing customer experiences while meeting the needs of the business. Engineer 2 will focus on the design and development of highly scalable software applications, services, data pipelines, and database solutions. The ideal candidate is creative, customer-driven, and has a passion for data products. This opportunity also provides various avenues to collaborate and influence several other platforms within Nordstrom Technology and has a company-wide impact – both business and engineering. You will also play a key role in working with a team of talented professionals to build our next generation of intelligent and highly scalable reporting structures at Nordstrom.

A day in the life…

  • Designs and develops analytical solutions using in-house and modern technologies for business.
  • Understands the architecture and network principles to be followed.
  • Able to understand data concepts, data models, and data structures and adhere to data principles.
  • Design and develop data processing pipelines in the Big Data ecosystem using Spark, Flink, Kafka, Presto, etc.
  • Collaborate with technical program management, data analysts, data scientists, and business partners to build scalable and durable solutions that drive business outcomes and reduce friction and time to delivery for our users.
  • Collaborate and partner with other tech teams and contribute at team level.
  • Work autonomously and closely with other team members.
  • Train interns and junior developers in the team.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of information technology concepts issues, trends, and best practices as they relate to the discipline/practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the specific needs of a major line of business and the related set of applications, systems, or functions.
  • Ongoing production support, performing on-call support duties.
  • Work with both Onsite and offshore resources daily to resolve any incidents and issues.
  • Own responsibility for code reviews and drives accountability in following software engineering principles.
  • Follows and maintains good data ecosystem principles and data quality while building data solutions.
  • Responsible for cost savings, notifications, alerts, and logging dashboards.
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipeline, Test coverage, and unit testing.
  • Build meaningful products that reduce automation friction to speed up the path to business outcomes.
  • Influence quality standards and understand, identify, and measure across the entire solution.
  • Identify performance issues and optimize the solution.
  • Partner with analyst stakeholders toward delivering highly effective self-service BI solutions, like Tableau and enterprise data sources.
  • Communicate results clearly and efficiently to our analyst partners.

We’d love it if you have…

  • 4+ years of professional experience in the merchandise planning area.
  • 4+ years of experience in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, Python, Scala).
  • 3+ years of experience with Databases, SQL, data modeling, data mining, and automated engineering solutions.
  • Experience with cloud environments (AWS or other equivalent cloud providers).
  • Experience with distributed systems (Kubernetes, AWS EMR, etc.).
  • Experience in developing near real-time data processing solutions using Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming.
  • Experience with the Spring boot framework.
  • Strive to deliver results, make quality technical decisions, manage complexity, and drive a vision while being customer-focused.
  • Experience with standard industry practices for engineering and operational excellence.
  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in CS, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or closely related degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in scripting for automation (Python, R, etc.).
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience writing complex, highly-optimized production-quality SQL (we work mostly with Redshift and Teradata. SparkSQL. Presto is a plus).
  • Working knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, etc., or features on other similar cloud hosting platforms.
  • Strong familiarity with batch processing and workflow management platforms (Airflow preferred).
  • Fluency with BI software and data visualization concepts to empower non-technical, internal stakeholders to drive their analytics and reporting (Tableau preferred).
  • Knowledge of Linux/Docker and open-source software development.
  • Knowledge of scalable distributed systems, service-oriented and event-driven streaming architecture.
  • Passion for new technologies, operational excellence, and customer impact.

Pay Range Details

The pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be different in other locations.

Washington: $121,500 - $188,500 Annually.

This position may be eligible for performance-based incentives/bonuses. Benefits include 401k, medical/vision/dental/life/disability insurance options, PTO accruals, Holidays, and more.
