Salary Range: $47.0268 - $56.9213 hourly, $97,816 - $118,396 annually

Appointment Type: Classified - Provisional. This is a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service Examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

Job Description

City College of San Francisco is looking to recruit full time, (40 hours/week), full year (260 days/fiscal year) Institutional Police Officers. Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The officer's primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of San Francisco Community College District campuses.

Responsibilities and Job Duties:

  1. Maintain law and order within and surrounding City College campuses and other district sites.
  2. Provide a safe and secure environment for the students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  3. Respond to all emergencies on District property in a professional and courteous manner.
  4. Uphold and enforce state and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations related to the San Francisco Community College District.
  5. Provide assistance and/or first aid.
  6. Perform traffic control and investigate traffic collisions.
  7. Issue warnings or citations for observed violations.
  8. Patrol assigned areas in a marked patrol vehicle and/or on foot.
  9. Provide money escorts upon request on District property.
  10. Conduct investigations of various crimes; interview suspects, victims and witnesses; make arrests and prepare reports as necessary.
  11. Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing directions and responding to inquiries.
  12. Respond to complaints in potentially hostile situations; intervene and mediate disturbances.
  13. Testify and present evidence in court as necessary.
  14. Assist during natural disasters and other extraordinary circumstances.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Police or his/her designee.

Working Conditions:

This classification may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, running, or sitting for prolonged periods; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; moderate to heavy lifting; possible exposure to physical injury and other dangers inherent in police work. Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye. Officers are required to wear police uniforms, bulletproof vests, and required police gear.

Officers are required to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays. Officers may be assigned to any of the district campuses under department policy and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination); AND Experience: One (1) year of experience as a police officer, military police unit member, or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property; AND

  1. Requires possession of a valid California Driver License; AND
  2. Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate (issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training) is required prior to field work assignment and within twelve (12) months of hire date, as a condition of employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Certificate of completion from a P.O.S.T. academy.
  2. Completion of 60 units of college credits preferably in Administration of Justice.
  3. Two years of verifiable work experience.
  4. One year of law enforcement experience.
  5. Specialized training in law enforcement, security, or related field.
  6. Experience in an educational setting, preferably in community colleges.
  7. Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  8. Clear communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  10. Reliable, responsible, dependable, and a good team player.
  11. Willingness to work extended hours or start early when required.
  12. Ability to work effectively under pressure and pay attention to detail.
  13. Experience in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
  14. Understanding of regulations related to handling confidential student information.
