Duties & Responsibilities
• Physically able to hike distances above 12 miles and carry the weight of their own gear, potentially participant gear, and group gear
• Comfortable with camping and sleeping in a tent for several days at a time
• Be able to go without power, water, and without showering for days at a time
• Shows compassion to those who may struggle
• Be ready for unforeseen circumstances or hazards
• Properly inspect, appropriately use, and maintain all equipment and supplies
• Provide guidance and safety to all participants and staff through program
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe working area
• Other duties or projects as assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by policies and procedure outlined in the SBR staff handbook
Qualifications & Training
• 18 years of age or older
• Ability to read topography maps and other elements accurately. (Training provided)
• Be or become certified in WFR and CPR
• Preferred: Experience backpacking or camping
• Know how to purify water, start a fire, pack a backpack, and tie knots
• Ability to use Microsoft Teams daily for work related communication and coordination
• Be or become a registered member of Scouting America
Performance Results
• Completes contract period with 2-4 positive experiences
• Receive one or more Staff Appreciation Cards from staff or participants
• Provide at least one memorable moment that matters to a participant
• Contribute at least one improvement to your department
Physical Requirements
• Up to 8 hours a day of either standing, walking, hiking, and the ability to lift 70 lbs.
• Can pass the physical exam and approved for SBR height and weight requirements
