What We Offer
The Quality Laboratory Technician will be a member of the lab team that supports the ECUI Unit and its treatment and disposal of wastewater generated by the Baytown Plant. The ECUI unit processes and treats storm water as well as wastewater generated through production processes across the site. The technician is responsible for the accurate reporting of samples caught to maintain permits and avoid violations with local authorities, state/government agencies. The incumbent works closely with unit personnel and goes out into the field to catch samples. The technician will also support the Chlor-Alkali Unit and fence line companies through in-process and finished goods testing. Technicians within the laboratory are responsible for troubleshooting and repair of equipment and can work independently as well as being a member of the laboratory team.
Will complete quality testing for the Chlor-Alkali unit for lot release and environmental testing for the ECUI facility for the site.
Major Responsibilities

  • The ECUI Lab technician will go out into the field to collect samples for testing from headers and ponds. Caution should always be taken when working outside in nature (i.e., wasps, snakes, and other wildlife). The applicant must know that equipment can be heavy and proper lifting and carrying techniques should be kept in mind through the day.
  • Willingness to work weekends.
  • Future work schedule will be a (4) 10hr work week on a XY Shift Schedule.
  • Willingness to work his/her fair share of overtime.
  • Removal of generated laboratory waste by the end of shift to the waste pad.
  • Exchange of gas cylinders on the gas pad i.e., single cylinders to movement of 6-Packs.
  • Willingness to work alone in the lab. A Lone Worker alert button is utilized to alert production personnel.
  • Consult with the DTL on the day shift with concerns or needs as well as the area chemist.
  • Operates and maintains testing equipment for: ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) Spectrophotometry, titration, pH meter, analytical balances, moisture analyzer, Gas Chromatography & HPLC, Headspace GC to name a few.
  • Writes a Technical Service Request (TSR) when maintenance or troubleshooting cannot resolve the instrument problem to the Instrument Scientist as a handover for the PCS Laboratory partnership.
  • Performs testing in support of the statistical quality control (SQC) program for instruments.
  • Entry of laboratory data into Sample Manager (LIMS) and HACH-WIMS.
  • Segregates waste generated from testing during the work shift for disposal on the Less Than 90 Day Pad.
  • Support productions need for accurate results through timely and reliable sample testing.
  • Supports the unit chemist with sample testing requests and keeps him/her informed.
  • Works with production personnel to resolve issues in a timely manner during production upsets where the stream can be isolated or contained.
  • Works safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following standard operation procedures, safety procedures, and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Performs safety and housekeeping walkthrough of work areas.
  • Maintains a clean work area and stocks work area with supplies.
  • Write up of shift relief as needed in Shift Connector by the end of shift.
  • Questions failing results entered by him/her and acts.
  • Informs laboratory chemist of questionable results and requests direction when needed.
  • Support Regulatory Affairs need for accurate results through timely and reliable testing on permit compliance (TCEQ) samples.
  • Support key partners' needs for accurate results through timely and reliable sample testing.
  • These key partners take care of the following: biological treatment system (BIOX) and plant welds.
  • Support Laboratory Safety Steering Committee (LSSC) and Industrial Hygiene Plan.
Special Note: in 2025, current project is to merge the Chlor-Alkali and ECUI labs under one roof. The new BC Lab will be at the ECUI Laboratory location. Four technicians will support testing on day shifts.
What You Offer
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Biology
  • The eligibility to apply for and obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within a reasonable timeframe
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of lab experience, preferably in wastewater treatment
  • Experience with lab software systems (e.g., Sample Manager, HACH-WIMS, Empower, Titration)
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and OneNote), SharePoint
  • Heavy emphasis on mechanical ability
Essential Knowledge and Skills :
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Mechanical aptitude with laboratory instrumentation
  • Initiative driven
  • Knowledge of/and experience in standard analytical chemistry and possible microbiological methods.
  • Ability to multi-task while working independently with occasional supervision.
  • Ability to analyze, review, and summarize data in an effective manner when needed in emails sent to production and laboratory personnel.
  • Good technical and interpersonal communication skills.
