Description

The Senior Data Center Engineer is a key player in server engineering, responsible for leading the planning of maintenance and the development of strategies across various platforms, with a primary focus on Linux systems. This role demands expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, VMware, Cisco UCS, and complex IT troubleshooting, with a working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory.

  • Lead the planning and execution of hardware and software upgrades, prioritizing Linux-based systems
  • Oversee the monitoring and maintenance of server clusters, especially Linux environments
  • Operate in specialized client/server environments, with a focus on Linux solutions
  • Maintain and configure DNS services, with knowledge of Active Directory integration
  • Manage a variety of data storage systems, emphasizing Linux-compatible solutions
  • Automate routine tasks using Python or Shell scripting, particularly for Linux environments
  • Document server environments for change control and technical repository, focusing on Linux configurations
  • Utilize RHEL, VMware, and Cisco UCS, with an emphasis on Linux implementations
  • Support file and block data storage and backup systems, ensuring data integrity in Linux environments

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (Required) or relevant experience in data center engineering beyond the minimum required work experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a 1-1 ratio (i.e., one year of relevant work experience equals one year of required education).

Minimum Work Experience
7 years of hands-on systems engineering experience (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Excellent written and oral communication skills

Required Licenses and Certifications
One or more of: MSCE, VMware VCP, AIX, Citrix, EMC (Required)

Functional Accountabilities

  • Provide administration for multiple servers and hybrid cloud; ensure server availability.
  • Perform network operating system and application software installation/upgrades.
  • Configure server hardware and network communications; assist in the development of configuration standards.
  • Analyze system performance and storage usage.
  • Analyze systems and cloud trend analysis and configuration for optimization.

System Integration/Implementation

  • Engineer and build and maintain data storage and backup platforms.
  • Integrate hardware and operating systems software into existing network technologies.
  • Assist with integration of various network operating system environments (Novell, AIX, OS400, VMS, NetWare, Windows NT).
  • Implement client/server solutions to support various application suites; support the implementation of applications into production.
  • Participate in installation, move, adds, and changes in the environment.
  • Set and manage deadlines.

System/Project Planning

  • Engineer and deploy hardware and operating systems design and configuration.
  • Participate in the design of disaster recovery planning.
  • Assist in the creation of test plans and scripts for backup and recovery solutions.
  • Assist in the development of disk storage solutions.
  • Perform hardware and network diagnosis.
  • Capable of devising ways to accomplish a difficult purpose; ability to recognize a problem and construct an effective solution compatible with overall company operations.

Technical Proficiency

  • Demonstrate understanding of standard networking protocols, virtual environments, and hybrid cloud.
  • Maintain professional expertise through continuing education at conferences, seminars, user group meetings, and review of current literature.
  • Pursue industry standard technical certifications.
  • Provide technical support and consultation to IS staff.

IT Best Practices

  • Actively participate in the Department's ITIL processes.
  • Participate in the Incident Management process; proactively work to resolve incidents and meet service requests; document relevant data on requests and resolutions in the agreed upon timeframe.
  • Escalate incidents according to procedures; convert incidents to change requests as needed.
  • Participate in the Change Control process; complete change tasks and update them with relevant information and status changes.
