What your job will be like:

As a Data Acquisition Scientist, you will be responsible for providing support for the development, implementation, and operation of data acquisition systems for all nuclear physics experiments at the laboratory. The focus of this position is the design and coding of software and driver libraries that will interface with firmware specific to embedded processors in data acquisition systems. This includes trigger systems and front-end digitization hardware. The position duties also include support for the operation of data acquisition systems in the experimental Halls, hardware test stations throughout the laboratory, and at collaboration institutions.

In this role you will:

  • Work with staff from nuclear physics experiments to gather requirements for front-end data acquisition software and hardware required to support acquisition of data from experiments
  • Complete conversion of the requirements into a design, documenting the design and presenting the design for review by the experimenters, members of the data acquisition, and fast electronics groups
  • Drive implementation of the design in both hardware and software, while working with other staff to develop data acquisition systems
  • Assist with the deployment and commissioning of the completed and debugged systems, including debugging of the hardware, firmware, and supporting software
  • Provide on-site assistance in debugging and maintenance of deployed systems.
  • Lead assigned projects from requirements gathering to final deployment either individually or as the leader of a team.

Qualifications we require:

Education

  • Ph.D. in Physics

Experience

  • 5 or more years of prior experience designing trigger and/or data acquisition custom systems for Nuclear Physics experiments

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge in the techniques for design, coding, and debugging of front-end data acquisition hardware and software, including programming skills in C and C++, and experience with programming in Linux and VxWorks environments
  • Experience in designing and coding of data acquisition custom software for Nuclear Physics experiments
  • Ability to communicate ideas both to peers and to experimenters who are the 'customers' for the software
