Job Summary
Auburn University Honors College seeks candidates for an Academic Advisor position, who will have the opportunity to guide undergraduate students on academic matters, including course selection, registration procedures, study habits, and resolving academic issues. The advisor will meet face-to-face with students to discuss their goals, interpret University policies, and provide support in navigating curriculum choices. This role also involves assisting with orientations, such as Camp War Eagle and Honors Transfers, and participating in Honors recruiting efforts.
The advisor will manage student records in compliance with state and federal regulations, ensuring data security and accuracy. They will also utilize technology to enhance advising services, verify and process student forms, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. In addition to these duties, the advisor may teach Honors Participation Courses and actively engage in professional development. Building strong relationships with faculty, departments, and other stakeholders is key, as is fostering a collaborative, team-player mindset.
The ideal candidate will be dynamic, enthusiastic, and possess a deep understanding of the higher education community, with the ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external constituents, including administration, alumni, parents, students, and faculty. The Academic Advisor will report to the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs.

Essential Functions by Job Level
Advisor I:
  • Advises students in matters related to goals, policies, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, course scheduling, academic action, and problem resolution. Makes appropriate referrals.
  • Interprets University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Works with others in order to provide students timely information on educational options and University policies.
  • Assists with student orientations.
  • Verifies, certifies, and/or completes appropriate student-related forms and processes, including graduation, athletics, Veteran Affairs (VA), financial aid, and other university processes.
  • Maintains student and advising records in accordance with State/Federal law and University regulations, including data security.
  • Utilizes appropriate technology to support effective advising.
  • Actively involved in campus through professional development opportunities and developing contacts with departments and faculty.
  • May teach Honors courses and perform other assigned duties.
Advisor II: In addition to Advisor II
  • Facilitates college- and/or university-level advising projects.
Advisor III:
In addition to Advisor I/II
  • Facilitates college- and/or university-level advising projects. Provides leadership for campus-wide advising projects.
  • Develops goals and objectives for improvement of the advising unit in conjunction with the direct supervisor; implements the plans for improvement of advising functions and models within the college.
  • Actively involved in professional development at all levels (campus, and regional/national), represents the academic unit through participation on University committees, caucus leadership, and/or teaching courses, and networks with other departments and/or colleges and the Office of the Director of Advising to ensure a coordinated approach to advising and retention.

Advisor I:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
  • No experience required
Advisor II:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and 3 years of experience in advising of which 2 years includes full-time primary duties of advising in higher education OR
  • Master's degree in any field and 2 years of experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher education OR
  • PhD in any field and 2 years of Experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher education.
Advisor III:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and 5 years of experience in advising of which 4 years includes full-time primary duties of advising in higher education OR
  • Master's degree in any field and 4 years of experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher education OR
  • PhD in any field and 4 years of experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher ed

Master's degree or progress toward a Master's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline; experience with academic advising in a developmental model; teaching, and/or student services experience at the post-secondary level; demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently as well as with a team; knowledge of advising theory, practices, and procedures; the ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff; strong interpersonal and written communication skills; proficiency with relevant computer skills, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Banner. Participation as a student in a university Honors program.
