General Definition of Work
The Transit Parts and Service Assistant performs technical and administrative support in the areas of receiving, ordering and issuing parts and supplies, preparing information for inventories and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Parts and Service Administrator.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Essential Functions

  • Unloads new inventory from freight trucks and verifies consistency with packing slip
  • Operates forklift and pallet jacks in the process of loading or unloading large shipments of parts and equipment
  • Assists sales vendors and delivery persons at Blacksburg Transit
  • Orders and receives parts from vendors as needed
  • Manages inventory including barcoding and stocking supplies, updating inventory, equipment, fuel, supplies or other material counts as needed
  • Assists other maintenance staff with dropping off and picking up vehicles being repaired
  • Assists with packing products and shipping out for repairs or returns to vendors
  • Researches parts via electronic/hard copy manuals
  • Issues parts to mechanics
  • Assists with preparing documentation for surplus items
  • Completes various forms, reports, maintenance records or other documents
  • Receives and distributes Blacksburg Transit department packages
  • Maintains and updates information on chemical SDS site for Blacksburg Transit location on the current SDS Management system
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of automotive equipment
  • General knowledge of inventory procedures
  • General knowledge of business mathematics
  • General knowledge of standard office equipment
  • Must possess basic computer skills
Education and Experience
  • Must be 19 yrs or older
  • High School Diploma or GED Certification required
Special Requirements
  • Must possess or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement in Virginia with a satisfactory driving record
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
  • A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
  • Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration, will be followed during the employment period

Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions
  • Frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places and exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
