Regional General Counsel , U.S. & LATAM

Your role within the Team

As a member of the Legal affairs team, and a member of the Legal Leadership Team, you will report to the General Counsel and will provide oversight and direction on all legal matters pertaining to the businesses in U.S. and Latin America, including RFP process and responses, contracting activities, and day-to-day advice. This is a strategic role in which the nature of work is both complex and challenging and will demand a hands-on orientation. The RGC will help accelerate the growth of the business through a well-crafted legal strategy.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop a strategic understanding of AtkinsRéalis business and contribute and be involved in commercial and business initiatives;
  • Provide thought leadership, strategic consultation and innovative solutions on commercial challenges and opportunities to influence and shape key business decisions;
  • Offer proactive advice to Executives, and other internal stakeholders on existing, potential, and future legal risks or regulatory issues and apply effective risk management techniques;
  • Be a key partner through negotiating and documenting joint venture agreements, shareholder agreements, RFPs, and memoranda of understanding as well as other key commercial agreements, including alliance contracts with public and private clients or partners;
  • Monitor international and national legal developments that may impact AtkinsRéalis’s U.S. or LATAM activities;
  • Under the direction of the General Counsel, hire, instruct and manage outside counsel in U.S. and LATAM, as and when required;
  • Prepare periodic reports for management and auditors on open legal matters and risks;
  • Provide strategic leadership in the management of the members of the legal department, including establish performance objectives, monitor progress, and provide appropriate training and coaching to ensure that direct reports and other team members deliver successfully against the organization’s requirements;
  • Responsible for succession planning. In this regard, ensures that all direct reports are appropriately coached, guided, and developed for succession planning purposes in accordance with formal developmental plans;
  • Ensure that competent senior resources are hired and that they are effectively developed to ensure effective succession.

Qualifications for the Position

  • Legal degree and member of a State bar association in good standing required, engineering or management degree or related educational credentials an asset;
  • Minimum of 20 years experience in commercial or project counsel role whether inhouse or in private practice, experience with large complex infrastructure projects an asset;
  • Prior experience leading a team of in-house lawyers;
  • Strong work ethic, superior organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment under time constraints and work well independently and as a collaborative team member;
  • Ability to foster a culture of collaboration, within the legal team, with other functions and with the business;
