Dow has an exciting opportunity for a Labor and Employment Attorney in its HR Legal group with a preferred location of Midland, MI or Houston, TX (other locations within the U.S. may be considered).
In this role, you will serve as an Attorney that independently provides legal counsel to clients in practice area on all aspects of legal risk across a wide range of issues, in consultation with internal and external legal experts as appropriate. Requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines to solve complex problems. May lead projects or project steps within a broader project, with manageable risks and resource requirements, or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives. You will act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. You will work independently, receive minimal guidance.
In this role, with oversight from leadership, you will provide legal advice to members of the company's Human Resources function on legal issues associated with managing employees and will review company policies and programs for legal risk and recommend updates and revisions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice to members of the company's Human Resources function on legal issues associated with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).
- Advise HR team on legal issues associated with unionized environments. Review and interpret collective bargaining agreements and advise on potential labor law issues.
- Provide legal support for labor arbitrations and contract negotiation.
- Review company policies and programs for legal risk and recommend updates and revisions.
- Review compensation programs annually and other programs as needed (e.g., leave policies, severance plans, diversity programs) for compliance and legal risk.
- Lead Employee Review Meetings to review proposed employee terminations, advise leaders and HR on legal risk of terminations and other job actions.
- Advise HR professionals and leaders on legal issues arising from employee medical conditions that impact ability to work. Assess legal risks and recommend approaches to manage employee medical leave and accommodation requests.
- Act as legal counsel on employee investigations.
- Prepare and provide proactive training to HR employees on legal topics.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor or Master of Laws.
- Minimum of 4 years practicing as an in-house counsel or as an attorney with a major law firm or corporation.
- Admission to State Bar or eligible for admission.
- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4+ years’ demonstrable competence practicing labor and employment law with a major law firm, employment boutique firm or corporation.
- Strong law school credentials.
- Labor & Employment Law Certification.
- Masters of Laws (LLM) in Labor Law.
Note: Domestic relocation is available for this role and may be provided based on eligibility.
