The primary purpose of this position is to provide legal advice and services in connection with insurance matters to minimize legal exposure by ensuring the Company’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations and with internal policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a primary point of contact for insurance law advice for the business teams on various insurance and insurance product matters, including helping to construct policies, creating coverage enhancements, writing and revising endorsements, and providing coverage guidance and training to underwriters.
  • Provide accurate legal guidance on (re)insurance regulatory and compliance matters.
  • Review and revise intercompany reinsurance agreements, ceded reinsurance agreements, MGA agreements, and other (re)insurance-related agreements.
  • Conduct legal and regulatory research to help ensure compliance with applicable insurance laws and regulations.
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Maintain knowledge of the organization's operations and legal documents.
  • Provide legal advice to Underwriting, Finance, Operations, and Claims colleagues on regulatory and compliance matters.
  • Support underwriting strategy and product development by leveraging industry experience and trends and ensure approaches to new products are compliant with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Partner with Claims to keep abreast of coverage developments and concerns that may impact drafting decision-making.
  • Identify proactive solutions that will address the needs of our internal business partners and clients.
  • Successfully negotiate policy terms and conditions with brokers and insureds’ representatives, as needed.
  • Help ensure the organization maintains ongoing regulatory compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Work with external and internal sources to advise on all aspects of insurance product design and the launch of new products and services.
  • Manage projects within insurance operational requirements.
  • Partner with relevant supporting functions to ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate processes have been implemented or courses of action have been taken to effectively mitigate legal risk.
  • Select, engage, and direct outside counsel to undertake specific and more intricate research and/or work involving legal, regulatory, or business issues while managing the related outside legal spend.
  • Review, draft, and/or revise more complex or specialized legal documents and correspondence.
  • Perform any additional tasks or functions as may be required by the General Counsel.

In addition to the main responsibilities listed above, you will be expected to

  • Effectively collaborate with members of the Legal and Compliance team and other departments to ensure consistency in legal advice across the Company and provide top-notch customer service.
  • Work independently with attention to detail.
  • Apply legal knowledge and insight to all aspects of the business.
  • Function with a high degree of professionalism, respect for others and the business, ethics. and integrity.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active and in good standing with the bar of the State of New York.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience as an attorney with a focus on insurance product drafting.
  • Strong foundation in insurance law matters.
  • Knowledge and experience with insurance product rate and form filing requirements.
  • Ability to research insurance laws and regulations, and relevant case law, and ability to interpret and apply same.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide practical, strategic, and solutions-driven legal advice.

The base salary range provided below will be commensurate with candidate experience. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.

New York City Pay Range:

$217,900—$259,400 USD
