SUMMARY:
The Principal is responsible for leadership, program management, supervision, data management and analysis for programs and services for students. In addition, this position provides leadership in collaboration with respect to designing programs and services with local constituent districts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to examine how his/her/their position (directly or indirectly) impacts educational inequities in student achievement outcomes.
  • Engages in reflection and ongoing learning and development on critical concepts and terms identified in the Washtenaw ISD Educational Equity Policy including concepts such as cultural proficiency, racial equity, and systemic and structural inequities.
  • Maintains positive professional relationships with students, staff, parents, administration, and community.
  • Oversees, coordinates, and adheres to a vision for services and activities for special education staff.
  • Promotes high-quality instructional practices that consistently allow for excellent instruction schoolwide.
  • Ensures that academic policies and curriculum are followed.
  • Maintains a visible and consistent presence throughout the school.
  • Carefully selects and effectively assigns staff.
  • Provides supervision and evaluation of multiple special education teams/groups and staff.
  • Develops a culture of collegial and professional relationships among staff and students that promotes critical reflection, shared accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Exhibits an elevated level of professionalism with the ability to calmly manage crises and confidential information using good judgement and a positive, flexible attitude.
  • Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes.
  • Oversees the upkeep of school facilities and physical plant.
  • Promotes and coordinates interagency collaboration and efforts involved in the support of students with disabilities within the county.
  • Understands the IEPT process for all students.
  • Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education and shares this information with district staff.
  • Develops and provides budget recommendations and provides expenditure control on established budgets for WISD programs and services to the Executive Director of Special Education.
  • Assists in the recruitment and interviewing/selection of special education, related service, and support service staff.
  • Participates as a member of the district administrative teams, including acting as a committee member of the Special Education Administration Meetings (SEAM).
  • Prepares local, state, federal and WISD reports related to special education and submits appropriate reports to the Executive Director of Special Education.
  • Represents the agency in public matters related to the education of students with disabilities.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, budget, and all other paperwork required or appropriate.
  • Attends meetings and conferences as needed.
  • Abides by all applicable rules, regulations, policies procedures and statutes (Federal and State).
  • Performs other administrative duties as required by the Executive Director of Special Education.
  • Attends Board meetings as needed.
  • Maintains regular predictable attendance on-site.
  • OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED .


QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in special education (or related field) AND approval in one area of Special Education REQUIRED .
  • K-12 administrator certification REQUIRED
  • Full/temporary approval as a Michigan Supervisor or Director of Special Education REQUIRED .
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience in Special Education REQUIRED .
  • Consultation, training, group facilitation and process skills REQUIRED .
  • Three (3) years of administrative/managerial experience in Special Education preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in curriculum development and behavior interventions and support.
  • Knowledge of current trends in Special Education and impact of the trends on the special education community.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations affecting Special Education.
  • Experience working with and understanding diverse types of disabilities.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with staff, other agencies, and the public.
  • Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Possesses ability to read, analyze and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, or governmental regulation.
  • Possesses ability to draft reports, business correspondence and procedural manuals.
  • Possesses ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, parents, and the general public.
  • Possesses ability to gather and disaggregate relevant data.


TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrates ability to use a personal computer (PC) or MAC in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communications mechanisms, such as email conferencing.
  • Possesses knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software) is required.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrates ability to maintain program and grant budgets.
  • Demonstrates ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Demonstrates ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Possesses ability to comprehend the dynamics and sensitivity of an organization's culture and to solve related problems.

TERMS:
Compensation and other employment conditions to be established by the Board of Education as reflected in the Non-Affiliated Staff Manual Starting salary starting at (dependent upon experience) $100,025 - $122,930 (230 annual workdays).
