The Business Unit Director is responsible for directing operations in group to achieve results in accordance with Business Unit and Program goals regarding sales/net booking, revenue, profit, AR quality and positively contributing towards SSR's growth goals. Responsible for effectively managing the people, projects, and resources in the business unit. Ensures resources are in place to support staff and project needs and that processes are aligned to support Project Managers in achieving Total Project Success. Manages financial and marketing resources for the group. Manages current client relationships and engages in strategic planning to identify new business development opportunities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Creates and executes a business plan for the business unit that is aligned with SSR's strategic plan.
  2. Holds responsibility for overall business unit profitability, forecasting, and revenue management, which includes managing resources and efficiently meeting clients' needs.
  3. Accountable for monthly business operations meetings, with the program director and company leadership.
  4. Responsible for overall success of projects within the business unit, ensuring that established processes and procedures are in place to support Project Managers in achieving Total Project Success.
  5. Responsible for overall staffing needs (i.e., recruitment, selection, training); maintains a staff that supports the current workload and adjusts the staffing plan as future needs are identified.
  6. Collaborates with technical leaders to continuously develop staff and technical quality; creates an environment of learning and innovation that provides the best solutions to clients.
  7. Oversees the management responsibilities (i.e., work assignments, scheduling, work plans) of Project Managers, and Client Relationship Managers.
  8. Establishes the strategy for business development in the business unit with market and client leaders that supports Program sales goals, assists Client Relationship Managers in the pursuit of projects, and ensures client relationships are being developed and personal sales targets are achieved.
  9. Maintains program consistency, collaboration, and cohesion across all offices and staff.
  10. Ensures that personnel adhere to company QA/QC policies and procedures and to administrative policies (e.g., time sheets, expense reports, and purchase order requirements).
  11. Evaluates the performance of staff and assists them in their professional development and growth.
  12. Resolves disputes and conflicts that develop within the business unit or with clients.
  13. Participates in industry-specific professional activities to promote the technical reputation of the firm.
  14. Maintains personal service relationships with major long-term clients and ensures client satisfaction.
  15. Mentors staff on project financial management, project management, and client relations.
  16. Works with HR to plan and execute employee development and technical training including facilitating development through internal training.
  17. Evaluates the performance of staff and provides salary and bonus recommendations.
  18. Ensures that all necessary inter-discipline coordination and other communications are being effectively accomplished at all levels.
  19. Creates and supports an environment of collaboration and engagement within the team.
  20. Performs senior consultant or technical advisor on projects as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. KNOWLEDGE
    Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) software; thorough knowledge and understanding of how to manage the financial, marketing, human resources, and operations of multiple projects and a medium to large sized department; thorough knowledge of the discipline within his/her expertise and knowledge of the other disciplines within the firm; knowledge of contracts, design specifications, and project management; general knowledge of industry-related software (i.e., Newforma and Revit).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A registered technical professional or technical professional with at least 12 years of practical experience in one of the technical disciplines practiced by the firm.
  2. 10 years of experience in the management of significant projects, technical resources, and/or a team of technical professionals.
  3. An expert within the discipline of his/her expertise.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently use a computer for several hours at a time; may need to periodically maneuver over, under, and around barriers as well as climb ladders on a job site; ability to transport plans and baggage weighing up to 30 pounds; travel by car and plane in order to visit other offices and attend meetings, conferences, and events.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoors in a normal office environment with some exposure to excessive noise, darkness/poor lighting, fumes, or dust; may travel to and navigate construction sites, some of which may be at high altitudes or small spaces with dirt or dust particles; occasional overnight travel (about 20% of the time) to attend meetings, conferences, and events.
