Nature of Duties:
The nature of the duties for the Cardiovascular Medical Assistant (CMA) is to assist the clinical staff and physicians by providing direct and indirect patient care in areas of patient mobility, diagnostic testing, phlebotomy, and pre and post procedure care by facilitating a positive patient experience. The CMA performs technical duties to assist the patients through provider visits, scheduled diagnostic testing, in office procedures, and assist clinical staff in maintenance of healthcare delivery standards. CMA treats patients in a caring warm professional manner and cooperates with all team leaders and co-workers. The CMA will also provide clerical support performing a variety of medical office duties.
Qualifications:
1. Current certification from one of the following:
a. CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) certified through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
b. RMA (Registered Medical Assistant )certified through American Medical Technologists (AMT)
c. CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) certified through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
d. NRCMA (Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant) certified through the National Association for Health Professionals
e. NCMA (National Certified Medical Assistant) certified through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
2. Preceptorship of 400+ clinical hours in Cardiology
3. Basic Life Support Certification
4. Effective Communication Skills
Specific Duties:
The Cardiovascular Medical Assistant job duties include but are not limited to:
1. Assisting the nursing staff with gathering pertinent patient information such as the chief complaint, medication list and/medication containers for provider visits to assist with reconciliation of medications, allergies, vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, pulse oximetry, patient weight, BMI, subjective information, social and family history, smoking status, and assist with obtaining/reviewing medical records for provider visits. Communicates concerns/and or problems to nursing staff/provider.
2. With guidance from the nursing staff, participates in patient care by utilizing CPOE to carry out physician orders thru the electronic EMR. These include scheduling of diagnostic testing, laboratory work, Electrocardiograms, patient discharge, etc.
3. Participates in patient and family education/explanation related to diagnostic testing performed in the clinic setting. (Nuclear/PET/Stress Testing/US/Echo/Vein/ Labs/Coumadin/Holter monitors/event recorders)
4. With guidance from the nursing staff, assist with filling out forms related to Home Health request, attending physician statements, employee medical leave, work/doctors excuses, handicap license, etc.
5. Draws blood (venipuncture and finger-sticks for PT/INR) and correctly fills out the lab requisition forms completely with proper ICD-10 codes.
6. Performs Electrocardiograms, explains the procedure to the patient, and operates all EKG machines.
7. Applies Holter/event/mobile telemetry monitors, explains the purpose of the procedure, and instructions for wearing and care of machine to the patient. Initializes, uploads, cleans and maintains the Holter monitors.
8. Performs the weekly OSHA checklist.
9. Completes weekly stocking of supplies in exam rooms, nuclear prep, ETT prep, and cleans patient rooms weekly which includes wiping down counter tops in the prep rooms.
10. Assists nurses with patients by moving patients to test areas, assisting with mobility, helping admit, assisting from the car into wheelchairs when needed, and occasionally bringing them to the hospital in a wheelchair.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned and serves in whatever other capacity deemed necessary for successful completion of the mission and goals of CIS and in concordance with its patient philosophy.
12. Fills out nuclear patient forms, checks for proper indications, physician orders and checking insurance to see if pre-certification is needed. Obtains consents when necessary.
13. Creates accurate and complete patient care reports and enters electronic messages to other departments to assist with patient flow and document patient wait times.
Receptionist/Clerical Duties
1. Answer phones, schedule appointments, check-in and check-out patients, call patients as needed to make appointments, follow-up with no show appointments, correspond with patients regarding appointments, and greet patients or customers in a friendly, professional manner. Obtain, complete registration and present the medical chart in order for the physicians/providers, nurses and medical staff to care for the patient and document in the record. Assist physicians with changes and confirm daily schedules. Perform appropriate and accurate documentation in the medical record as is applicable to patient service duties.
2. Provide billing department with clear copy of insurance cards and current demographic information. Check medical charts to ensure that insurance verifications are current and available for other personnel. Maintain HIPAA privacy and security and provide the CIS Notice of Privacy Practices to new patients or to any who request it.
Standards of Performance:
1. Adheres to the CIS Standards of Behavior.
2. Keeps work area neat and organized. Reports safety issues to team leader immediately.
3. Works efficiently and manages time wisely. Assist other employees when all duties are complete.
4. Communicates any problems, difficulties or concerns regarding job duties to the team leader.
5. Performs all duties without significant error occurring with any regularity.
6. Meets all deadlines and timeframes for completion of assignments.
7. Represents CIS in a professional manner at all times. Demonstrates acceptable ability to interact with physicians, staff ("internal customers") and "external customers" (patients, family members, insurance companies, home health etc.) on a professional level at all times. Exhibits good communication skills with physicians, patients, team leaders, and co-workers at all times.
8. Exhibits a harmonious relationship with other CIS employees in order to accomplish the duties and responsibilities of the position. While perfect harmonious relationships with all employees is sometimes not achievable, not more than an occasional complaint should be received by the team leader about the incumbent of this position.
9. The employee shall work and relate cooperatively with all other employees (internal customers) of CIS to assure optimum care for the patients of CIS and to achieve standards of care set forth by the CIS medical staff.
10. Adheres to the CIS Compliance Plan as it pertains to the above specific job duties. Uses best efforts to maintain compliance by following the CIS Corporate Compliance Plan, attending CIS compliance education, following medical documentation guidelines, and communicating concerns regarding compliance issues.
11. Performs accurate and complete documentation in the patient's medical record, when applicable. This includes documentation in both the paper record and the electronic medical record (EMR)
12. Work with the electronic medical record (EMR) staff to maintain quality and work towards future EMR development.
13. Maintains patient confidentiality according to the HIPAA standards of privacy and security.
