GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs blood sample collection from hospital inpatients and outpatients for analysis or other medical purposes.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
2. *Maintains competency and proficiency with respect to all phlebotomy procedures; maintains awareness of all laboratory policy, technical, and procedural changes.
3. *Performs blood collection from adult, children, and infant patients using appropriate capillary collection or venipuncture technique from hospital inpatients and outpatients.
4. *Is competent in outpatient processing workflows including, standing orders, treatment series, transplant, in-reach and outreach patient processes and reconciliation practices.
5. Accurately performs computer entry of patient demographic and testing information including specimen data collected by laboratory or other hospital staff.
6. *Serves as Phlebotomist-in-Charge as assigned. Following procedure, the Charge will triage collections, assign staff to worklist, troubleshoot and prioritize workload, assist with staff allocation and direction when call-ins occur.
7. Completes all mandatory safety training and follows all safety guidelines per written protocols.
8. *Completes assigned tasks accurately and timely, adhering to all laboratory standards, policies and procedures.
9. Performs limited patient testing on point of care instruments.
10. Answers telephone calls and responds to non-technical questions from hospital staff and/or patients.
11. *Provides patient care with compassion and empathy utilizing mandatory customer service tactics as required by policy/procedure.
12. Under supervision, assists in training new phlebotomy employees.
13. Assists in supply management and supply ordering.
14. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
15. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
16. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
2. Knowledge of phlebotomy methods and practice standards.
3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
4. Skill in the use and maintenance of general phlebotomy and laboratory instruments and equipment.
5. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
6. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.
8. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
9. Ability to provide solutions to problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
10. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.
11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
12. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.
13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalency required. Competency demonstrated in principle job functions required. Phlebotomist course completion preferred.
