This is a grant-funded position with supplemental start-up funding from the VCAA’s office. The continuation of this position beyond five years is contingent upon future funding.
We are seeking a 0.5 FTE senior research scientist to serve as the Director for the Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement (CSEE) for a 5-year term. CSEE is a UW tri-campus interdisciplinary research center focused on creating knowledge that advances our understanding of the dynamic connections that exist between ecological systems and social systems.
The director of the research center will report to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) at UW Bothell. In addition to serving as the Principal Investigator (PI) for Center grants, this position is responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of the Center’s operations while ensuring a commitment to integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The expectations for the director include:
Research Center Leadership
- Serve as the PI on multiple grants and proposals, including identifying research problems, designing hypotheses, writing proposals, implementing research phases, and publishing in peer-reviewed outlets.
- Develop and expand an interactive network of partners across the region to co-design research questions and disseminate results broadly.
- Develop a portfolio of funding opportunities that allows the Center to grow, providing benefits to UW Bothell.
- Maintain adequate funding (via grants, gifts, sponsorships) to support Center staff and activities.
- Co-write grants with faculty to expand and improve related programs.
- Secure industry gifts and sponsorships to advance the research portfolio.
- Maintain the interagency agreement with the Washington State Parks.
- Build and promote CSEE as a north Puget Sound resource for critical socio-ecological research.
- Create forums for dissemination of best practices for socio-ecological research.
- Participate in national and international summits, symposia, and conferences in the area of socio-ecological research.
Reporting and Communications
- Report administratively to the VCAA.
- Regularly communicate with academic affairs leadership, partners, and advisory councils.
- Develop stories and fundraising briefs in partnership with UW Bothell communications.
- Maintain relevant websites, social media, and other communication tools.
Supervision and Mentorship
- Provide direction and mentorship to support staff and students, ensuring alignment with Center goals.
- Delegate work and conduct performance evaluations.
- Ensure staffing is stabilized during this appointment period.
- Other duties as necessary.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Doctoral Degree and at least 6 years of job-related experience beyond the Ph.D.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements.

- Proven track record of scholarly achievements, including publications and grants.
- Proven track record securing external resources to advance research.
- Proficiency in program development and assessment.
- Sound financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
- Demonstrated experience leading and/or partnering with staff.
- Dedication to the mission and values of the Center and university.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Applicants should be current research scientists already employed with the UW.
- The Center is a self-sustaining unit, and all operating costs must be covered by external funding sources by the end of the five years.
