Job Summary

The Chief Medical Officer for UCSF St. Mary's and St. Francis Hospitals (SMSFH) at UCSF Health holds a vital leadership position responsible for overseeing and optimizing clinical operations, maintaining the highest standards of patient care, and spearheading initiatives for ongoing improvements in medical practices throughout the operational site. This role necessitates a deep well of medical knowledge, a strategic mindset, high emotional intelligence, and keen operational insight to lead and mentor a diverse team of healthcare professionals effectively. The SMSFH Chief Medical Officer is tasked with developing and implementing advanced clinical policies and procedures, ensuring that medical services are seamlessly aligned with the Business Unit's specific goals and the broader objectives of UCSF Health. The Chief Medical Officer is also critical in fostering a collaborative and innovative environment, promoting open and effective communication across various interdisciplinary teams. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to drive change and innovation within the healthcare system. This role involves active participation in strategic planning and decision-making processes at the executive level, contributing to UCSF Health's overall direction and success.
The Chief Medical Officer reports directly to the Business Unit Chief Medical Officer and indirectly to the St. Mary's and St. Francis Chief Executive Officer and collaborates closely with their operational dyad partner (the St. Mary's and St. Francis Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer) to ensure seamless integration of clinical and operational strategies. They will be part of a larger group comprising the St. Mary's and St. Francis hospitals physician leadership team under the direction of the Business Unit Chief Medical Officer. Additionally, they closely collaborate with and demonstrate facilitative leadership with Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, Practice Managers (s), and other UCSF Health System and Business Unit leaders.
The Chief Medical Officer - (SMSFH ) will provide medical oversight in the following areas:

  • Direction, planning, and coordination of all medical-related activities
  • Establish and implement standards for medical practices and policies
  • Ensure all (St. Mary's + St. Francis) clinical operations comply with regulatory requirements and external mandates, safeguarding the organization against legal and quality assurance risks.
  • Continuously analyze patient care data across (St. Mary's + St. Francis) to identify areas for improvement, implement strategies to enhance patient outcomes, and ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services.
  • Participate in regular meetings, status sheets, coaching, leader rounds, and huddles with Executive Medical Directors in their operational site to maximize patient care, quality, and safety.
  • Support and guide clinical services and advise Executive Medical Directors to align and drive improvement efforts with UCSF Health's True North and Business Unit's strategic goals across (St. Mary's + St. Francis) .
  • Ensure that communication of vital organizational priorities reaches Executive Medical Directors and Medical Directors within St. Mary's + St. Francis hospitals
  • Advance the principles of equity throughout St. Mary's + St. Francis hospitals, including setting, incorporating, and meeting specific equity metrics within quality improvement endeavors.
  • Participate in Business Unit senior executive-level strategic planning, contributing medical expertise to shape the organization's long-term goals and initiatives.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $262,200 - $552,200 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • MD in Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Ability to handle the executive management responsibilities in a subsidiary hospital.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development.
  • Possesses a highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center management, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize clinic metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in sensitive situations that may involve public scrutiny.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills. Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.
  • Strong ability to lead, inspire, and manage multidisciplinary teams and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Outstanding communication skills to effectively interact with healthcare professionals, executives, patients, and external partners, ensuring clear and effective information exchange.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends and issues, and develop innovative solutions to improve clinical operations and patient outcomes.
  • Completion of Lean training management and demonstrated successful application of Lean principles.
  • Significant proficiency in strategic thinking and planning, aligning clinical operations with organizational goals, and driving long-term improvements.
  • Deep understanding of medical practices, patient care standards, and clinical operations to provide informed guidance and make effective decisions.
  • Advocate for and report the needs and performance of represented clinical groups in a fair, professional, and balanced manner.
  • Champion of innovation, continuous improvement, and tests of change.
  • Commitment to principles of equity for all patients and staff.
  • Project management expertise, with the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration, or clinical degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Master's degree in business or health administration.

License/Certification

Licensed CA MD or DO.
