Summary/objective
As a Manuel Machine Shop apprentice, you will be trained in the proper set-up and operations of lathes, vertical boring mills, and horizontal boring mills.

Skills and Experience:
  • Manual Mill and Lathe experience - required to have both
  • Sets up machines in accordance with job prints and specifications to very close tolerances.
  • Machines parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measures, examines, and tests completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications; utilizes precision instruments including but not limited to micrometers, calipers, bore gauge, depth micrometer, and other inspection equipment as needed.
  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
  • Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitors the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.
  • Machine shop environment or similar work experience required
  • Starts, listens to, and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders

Physical demands
  • Ability to stand for extended periods - 8 hours minimum
  • Arm, hand and finger dexterity with both hands as required to manipulate machine tools and controls and to handle equipment components
  • Able to regularly sit, stoop, bend, crawl, reach, maneuver in tight spaces and move about the facility
  • Repetitive movement, bending or twisting, using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls, exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting.
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, unassisted, and comply with OSHA standards
