Other Conditions: General and/or Special funds. Appointment to begin August 2025. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year and will undergo a criminal background check.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses via on-campus and/or a variety of distance delivery modes; supervise field/practicum activities in field-based teacher preparation and/or BCBA programs;
  • Advise students;
  • Contribute expertise in areas of extensive support needs, applied behavior analysis, research designs, and/or grant writing for the Department of Special Education;
  • Maintain an active program of research/scholarly activity and publications in the area of specialization;
  • Provide service to the university, public schools, and professional community;
  • Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities;
  • Contribute to the University of Hawaii's mission as being a Hawaiian place of learning;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in special education with an emphasis on teaching students with extensive support needs, including students with intellectual disabilities, autism, or emotional/behavioral disorders; and/or applied behavior analysis; or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Will consider ABD if completed prior to hire date;
  • Experience working in public or private school settings (US or international location), as a licensed special educator with individuals who have extensive support needs;
  • Evidence of scholarly research activity in a line of inquiry related to students with extensive support needs;
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of special education for students with disabilities;
  • Experience providing evidence-based practices supporting the inclusion of students with extensive support needs;
  • Certified as a BCBA or BCBA-D;
  • Experience teaching, supervising, and/or advising special education teacher candidates in higher education;
  • Knowledge, experience, or research that advances and fosters Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) as a Hawaiian place of learning.
