JOB DESCRIPTION
COUNSELOR (Temporary)
WESTFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
Reports to: Westfield High School Principal
Overall Area: Primarily serve as the student advocate; provide counseling to all students and/or identified groups of students on issues which affect their academics, career exploration, and social and emotional wellness.
Essential Functions:
Academic/College & Career Planning
A. Enroll and orient new students to the high school.
B. Provide and coordinate in-service activities, resources, and support to staff, parents, and students as needed.
C. Remain current with state diploma requirements for Core 40 Diploma, Academic Honors Diploma and Technical Honors Diploma, as well as Graduation Pathways.
D. Present scheduling materials and information to students in grades 8-11.
E. Meet individually with students every year to go over graduation requirements, course selections and future plans.
F. Schedule at-risk students into the online credit recovery program, and manage online summer school registration for caseload.
G. Advise students on the college application process through large group meetings and individual student meetings. Meet with every senior individually in the fall of senior year.
H. Write letters of recommendation and complete Secondary Reports for college applications. Manage transcripts, and school reports through Scoir.
I. Serve on the WHS Counseling Center Scholarship Committee
J. Provide information to staff, students, and community to assist in the development of career expectations, goals, and opportunities.
K. Provide classroom guidance through Core programming for academic planning, career exploration, and the college search process.
L. Manage and maintain student 504 plans for caseload.
Social and Emotional Development/Personal Counseling
A. Serve as the student advocate through appropriate committee involvement.
B. Provide support and expertise as a consultant to educational and at-risk programs.
C. Refer students to the Westfield Youth Assistance Program as needed.
D. Provide parents and students with additional mental health referrals as needed.
E. Provide support, counseling & referral services for students who test positive in the Westfield High School random drug testing program.
Additional Responsibilities
A. Supervise lunch duty, hall duty and evening activities as assigned.
B. Assist Testing Coordinator with the scheduling of and monitoring of standardized tests, including PSAT, SAT, AP testing, and ASVAB.
C. Assist the principal and director of counseling in developing the master course schedule.
D. Remain current in the counseling field through professional affiliations, workshops, and training.
E. Each counselor will be also be assigned one or more of the following responsibilities:
  1. Attend special education conferences as student advocate as needed.
  2. Organize and coordinate all AP testing
  3. Organize and coordinate PSAT testing for grades 9,10, & 11
  4. Organize and coordinate ASVAB testing for grade 12
  5. Manage the 21st Century Scholars Program
  6. Coordinate Hoosier Boys and Girls State Programs
  7. Coordinate HOBY Program
  8. Coordinate a fall and spring College Fair and career/job hiring fair.
  9. Coordinate and manage the College Application Boot Camp each school year.
  10. Represent WHS Counseling Center in district/county counselor meeting.

F. Attend and participate in weekly counseling department meetings, student support meetings, and all-school meetings.
G. Coordinate the registration of and maintain the database for the Indiana University ACP dual credit program.
H. Coordinate and manage The Pursuit Institute and Ivy Tech Education programs.
I. Manage the database and schedule of the Pearson Connexus credit recovery program.
J. Complete the final edits of the 9-12 Grade Course Description Book and Course Selection Sheets.
K. Manage the set up and build of the Master Schedule each year with the assistance of another counselor and the principal. Attend Pre Build and Build workshops as needed to learn Powerschool updates.
L. Coordinate the acceptance and placement of foreign exchange students each year.
N. Update and manage the Westfield High School Core Course information on the NCAA web site.
O. Serve as coordinator and contact for the Lilly Endowment Legacy Fund, National Merit Scholarship Program, Indiana University Wells Scholar Program, and the Indianapolis Star Academic All Stars Program, and other related groups or programs.
P. Coordinate data management and public relations information for state reporting and school profile updates.
Q. Attend team meetings with the high school administration.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Hold a valid Elementary/Secondary Counselor's license
  2. Meet State requirements for position
  3. Meet all other requirements of experience and character that the Board of Trustees shall require
