Overview
We are seeking a dynamic Program Director to oversee and lead the year-round recreational and respite program. The Program Director will be responsible for the overall management and operations of the Program department, ensuring a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for all campers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 25 years of age.
- Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field, or appropriate professional certification.
- Minimum of one year’s experience working with people with disabilities in a camp setting, plus a minimum of at least 2 prior seasons of administrative and/or supervisory experience in an organized camp.
- Completion of a workshop, institute seminar, or course related to camping and/or environmental education within the last year.
- Current certification or certification within 6 months in Water Safety Instruction, Lifeguard Certification, Waterfront/Deep Lifeguarding certification, First Aid, CPR, Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter, and Medication Manager for Iowa.
- Valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License or obtain within 30 days and/or chauffeur’s license.
- Experience with high & low ropes courses, caving, rock climbing, rappelling, and canoeing.
- Knowledge of other program activities including nature, crafts, archery, etc.
- Self-motivated professional with leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
- Outstanding public relation skills.
- Ability to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time; ability to tolerate a variety of weather conditions; ability to lift and carry at least 50lbs.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for planning, developing, supervising, and administering the Camp Courageous year-round camping program for individuals with disabilities, as well as partnership rentals. Will work closely with all program staff to carry out position responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for developing the overall camping program to meet the objectives of Camp Courageous in the areas of outdoor education, camping, and recreation.
- Responsible for the recruitment of campers and the growth in numbers of campers served.
- Responsible for the general health, safety, conduct, and morale of the campers, partnership rental groups, and program staff. Responsible for the overall safety of program areas, equipment, and facilities.
- Recruit and schedule all spring camper groups.
- Recruit, interview, hire, and train the program staff and supervise and evaluate their work. Ensure all hiring procedures and documentation are completed, including mid-season evaluations and annual reviews.
- Responsible for the training and orientation of program staff.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with staff, campers, parents, and guardians.
- Demonstrate dependability with low absenteeism/tardiness.
- Demonstrate initiative by being a motivated self-starter.
- Use good judgment by exercising discretion in making sound independent decisions.
- Excellent communicator both verbally and nonverbally.
- Display outstanding interpersonal relations and sensitivity with campers, parents, guardians, and board.
- Develop and maintain relationships with special groups (i.e. Muscular Dystrophy Association, Special Olympics, etc.) and set up camp details for those special weeks.
- Inform all camp departments of schedule changes that may affect their particular area.
- Assist with camper behavior challenges.
- Review camper take-home reports.
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills by planning, preparing, and seeing projects through completion.

- Have a positive and professional attitude.
- Keep required certifications updated.
- Responsible for meeting all American Camping Association standards. Coordinates ACA visits and works with department heads to ensure standards are met and documentation is current.
- Plan and schedule holiday parties, festivals, and special events.
- Facilitate program staff meetings to review past campers and plan for future campers.
- Obtain donations for program use.
- Assist all camp departments as needed, including working open houses and fundraisers.
- Develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures in accordance with state laws and ACA standards.
- Communicate with local fire, police, and paramedics regarding site protocols and revisions.
- Development and implementation of camp rental program, including authorizing rental agreements.
- Identify and prioritize prospective partners and work to foster relationships with prospective rental partners and partner camps/community agencies.
- Implement human resource management practices to recruit, retain, and supervise staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned for the purpose of Camp Courageous and the service it provides.
OPTIONAL: THERAPEUTIC RECREATION INTERN SUPERVISOR:
- Obtain and/or maintain Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential.
- Meet National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) requirements for upkeep and renewal of CTRS credential, including CEUs, annual maintenance fees, and five-year cycle recertification.
- Develop, maintain, and update Internship Manual.
- Recruit, hire, and supervise qualified therapeutic recreation interns.
- Assist intern in orientation to the camp, its policies, procedures, and activities.
- Meet daily with intern to discuss progress, assignments, concerns, etc.
- Assist intern with school assignment requirements such as bi-weekly reports, evaluations, and other assignments.
- Assist intern with writing program and camper goals and objectives, evaluations, progress notes, and other documentation as required by NCTRC.

Pay: $30,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
