National Award-Winning Studio & Winner of Design Firm of the Year is actively seeking a Regional Managing Principal to join their new San Jose office. The award-winning architecture + design firm specializes in K-12 through college/university, healthcare, sports and corporate business sectors across the U.S. The company has won over 500 design awards and is recognized for shaping learning environments for students and the community. It's well established culture has also led the firm being named to the list of “Best Places to Work.” For over forty years, the multidisciplinary studio has created a client base of more than two-hundred clients, a list that includes university systems, hospital systems, school districts, and Fortune 500 companies.

The Managing Principal (MP) will serve as the company's Regional Director for the entire Northern California operation, including the Berkeley and Folsom offices. Working in close collaboration with the Managing Partner of the California Practice, the MP for the Northern California Region is responsible for directing the efforts of the local Directors in each office, and for providing leadership and coordination to organize a cohesive operation. The MP regularly interacts with senior representatives of current and prospective clients. The MP oversees all client relations, including project team performance and overall client satisfaction.

The Primary Responsibilities of the MP include:

Operational: The MP will ultimately be responsible for the delivery of services, the development of culture and the execution of processes within the offices. You will oversee all client relations, including project team performance and overall client satisfaction.

  • The MP will train the staff in client service and responsiveness standards. The operation will outperform competing firms and will set the gold-standard for performance and responsiveness within the market.
  • The MP will adopt a sense of “ownership” over the performance and the success of all Divisions in the company. The MP will promote these divisions to clients (whenever appropriate), will help to identify opportunities to grow these divisions and will require the same level of gold-standard performance to which the architects are held.
  • The MP will ensure that all projects are subjected to a thorough QA/QC review process.
  • The MP will participate in the weekly Southern California management meetings and the weekly inter-office California Director conference call.

Marketing/Business Development: The ability to establish and cultivate relationships with potential clients is essential. You will work closely with the firm’s Marketing & BD departments to develop new opportunities and build relationships.

  • The MP will play a key role in the regional business development plan.
  • The MP will seek to gain intimate knowledge of a client’s needs, interests, and “hot-topics.” The MP will organize RFQ responses and project interview presentations to articulate a customized message that will best position the company for a successful bid.
  • The MP will pursue speaking opportunities at conferences to enhance the company's image as the leader in the industry.

Management/Leadership: The MP will promote a support structure to further develop the abilities of the staff. The MP will also be responsible for overseeing the recruitment of new staff to supplement an already very talented team.

  • The MP will work with the HR department to establish a plan of action to attract top-level talent.
  • The MP will ensure that the Northern California staff participates in ongoing project management and project delivery training programs that are available.
  • The MP will coordinate the Berkeley and Folsom leadership teams to monitor project performance standards.
  • The MP will build an office that is conducive to the company's Circuity to promote team communication, delegation, accountability, and efficiency.
  • The MP will have the responsibility of managing the financial performance of the office with respect to staffing, projections, and profitability.

Strategic: The MP will be a key contributor in continually refining and implementing the strategic plan throughout Southern California.

  • The MP will have in-depth knowledge of the Northern California area clients, growth rates, building plans and opportunities to expand our business.
  • The MP will attend all California strategic planning sessions with the state-wide leaders of the California operation, as directed by the Managing Partner of the California Practice.

Position Requirements

  • Must be a Registered Architect.
  • 20 years of professional experience.
  • 5 years of experience managing a multi-office operation.
  • Educational Architecture experience strongly preferred.
  • Must have a strong, unbreakable client orientation.
  • Excellent live presentation and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
