Description
The Village of Huntley, a vibrant, growing community of approximately 30,000 residents located in southern McHenry County and northern Kane County, is seeking applicants for the position of Meter Technician in the Public Works Department.
This is a technical and semi-skilled position within Village's water meter reading system. The position's primary responsibilities include installing, inspecting and maintenance of water meter reading equipment. Essential job functions require direct interaction and inter-departmental cooperation with Finance and Development Services Department.
Examples of Duties
Standard:
Provide exceptional customer service, promote and maintain a positive Village image in a constructive work environment. and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community. Adhere to all departmental and Village safety policies. Consistent attendance and punctuality is required.
Position Specific:
  • Completes meter readings for approximately 12,000 accounts and 2,000 irrigation accounts within the Village of Huntley
  • Repairs and replaces water meters, radio read meter transceiver units (MXU's), and batteries
  • Conducts final readings and inspections for water and irrigation meters
  • Documents maintenance and repairs work
  • Conducts Parkway/Driveway Ribbon Inspections
  • Assists the Finance department and its collections effort process by placing red tag notices for accounts 60+ days past due, and performs necessary water services functions to support shut off procedures
  • Provides data entry support for new accounts, meter exchanges, and repairs
  • Assists in billing cycle by conducting high usage checks
  • Assists in Village-wide programs such as snow and ice removal or any additional Village-wide programs
  • Participates in all on-call activities, and scheduled weekend and holiday overtime activities

  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and Village-wide goals

  • Attends professional development workshops and seminars to keep abreast of municipal government trends and developments

Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by vocational courses in the mechanical trades, or related field. Experience in work which provides a familiarity with the trades and equipment used in water meter and service installations, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement within six months of hire date
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class D Public Water Supply Operator Certificate as issued by the Illinois EPA within 1 year of hire date and a Class B Public Water Supply Operator Certificate as issued by the Illinois EPA within 3 years of hire date
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Operational knowledge and repair of water meters, backflow prevention devices, and all associated connections
  • Knowledge of general maintenance, construction and labor tools, equipment, and practices
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to the proper execution of assignments
  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions
  • Ability to be well-organized and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Considerable computer knowledge involving water billing software, Word, Excel, Microsoft Office, and e-mail programs
  • Ability to perform basic record keeping
  • Ability to perform work in a safe manner, follows safe work procedures, and takes necessary safety precautions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, customers, and co-workers
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform relatively heavy manual labor
  • Skill in the use of a variety of tools and equipment required by the work
  • Ability to perform in adverse weather conditions

The employee must occasionally lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, carry and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and slippery surfaces, humid conditions, extreme cold and heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electric shock
Supplemental Information
Compensation: The salary range is $52,500.00 - $73,500.00, with the starting pay depending upon qualifications. The Village offers an excellent benefits package which includes participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, voluntary participation in a deferred compensation 457 plan, and paid time off.
Hours: Forty (40) hours per week, Monday - Friday between the hours of 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Post Offer Requirements: Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen, along with a criminal background check.
