Overview

Position Purpose: The Maintenance Inspection Lead will provide support to the inbound inspection function within the GATX maintenance network. The role will report to the Director, Maintenance Management and assist GATX maintenance facility inbound inspection departments meet or exceed Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) goals. The role requires extensive experience performing inbound inspection and estimates of various rail car types (tank, covered hopper, box, etc.) using GATX systems including ShopPortal and MMS. The successful candidate will work cooperatively and effectively influence various internal stakeholders, including shop management, shop inspectors/estimators, FMELs, FMAs, and ASLs. Additionally, the successful candidate shall have a genuine interest in the learning and development of inbound inspectors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on and remote training to new inbound inspectors on various rail car types. Training will include use of the Field Manual, inspection gauges, specific component details, and GATX procedures and training material. Training will also include use of GATX and Industry applications and systems (ShopPortal, MMS, Railinc, etc.). Maintain Learning Path and Experience Tracker documents. Training may be provided at home shop or at any shop in the GATX network. Supplemental training provided as needed to current inspectors as identified by trending data of FMA reject rate, add-ons, blue tags, and production output or at the request of shop leadership. Training will support the following SQDC goals:
    • Safety: Train inbound inspectors to conduct inbound inspection following GATX safety procedures and to do so in a safe manner.
    • Quality: Train inbound inspectors to create an estimate based on a consistent and quality inspection across GATX shop network; minimize estimate rejects and inspection related blue tags/add-ons/rework.
    • Delivery: Support facility and network goals in the completion of estimates vs. budget and ensure that quality estimates reduce delays in the repair process.
    • Cost: Ensure we adequately recover customer liability repairs to the extent appropriate while also maintaining repair costs to GATX and Industry standards.
  • Serve as a back up support for shops with inbound inspection absences (PTO or otherwise) to maintain consistency of estimate delivery goals. Back up support may include on-site, hands-on inbound inspection or remote estimate creation support. Additionally, the role may provide home shop estimate creation support as needed.
  • Support the continuous improvement of the inbound inspection/estimation function as directed by the Director, Maintenance Management. Improvement support may include, but not be limited to, learning content development, shop and employee performance evaluation, etc.

Other: This role may require a high % of travel (up to 75%) and will require the successful candidate to climb on top of and under rail cars. This role will be working out of GAGA (Waycross, Georgia) or GAHT (Hearne, Texas).
