As part of the retail team, the Mortgage Originator helps Empeople Credit Union gain loyal members by creating legendary experiences while helping members actively manage their mortgage. When establishing relationships, they uncover common financial problems, root causes, and solutions for a target segment of our members and can identify candidates for our Ongoing Financing Guidance program.
The Mortgage Originator is responsible for building, developing, and maximizing new and current relationships with key contacts within the Mortgage Industry in the Maine Market. The Mortgage Originator participates in networking events within various mortgage focused outlets with the goal of introducing and promoting the credit union to new members.

- Generate new business by proactively seeking out and developing new mortgage business though networking, referrals, and direct outbound calling.
- Become an active role/member in but not limited to the Greater Portland Board of Realtors (GPBR), Maine Association of Realtors, Maine Association of Mortgage Professionals (MAMP), Maine Real Estate Development Association (MEREDA), Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and The Real Estate Learning Group (TRELG). This will require active attendance at monthly meetings and evening networking events.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with members, Realtors, builders, and other industry professionals. Proactively networks with local realtors and attends realtor functions to promote the credit union’s products and services.
- Leverage LinkedIn to expand your professional network by connecting with key influencers and potential partners within the mortgage and real estate industries.
- Reviews applications to ensure each member meets established loan policy guidelines for approval of ARM loans by analyzing the debt to income, applicant credit score and loan to value ratio; approves the loans based on pre-determined limits as outlined in the loan policy.
- Screens applications for fixed rate mortgage loans to select appropriate product based on secondary market guidelines; if pre-screen is acceptable the mortgage originator runs the application through desktop underwriter to obtain mortgage findings.
- Uncover FHA and VA opportunities utilizing our Third-Party Originator.
- Provides initial approval on mortgage loans by examining application and supporting documentation, estimating creditworthiness and calculating repayment risk.
- Interviews applicants and enters required information directly into the on-line mortgage application; ensures applications include all required and accurate documentation.
- Manages pipeline up to 12 loans to close 6-10 mortgage loans per month; maintains contact with all mortgage members in pipeline to ensure proactive member service.
- Maintains an error-free client file and ensures all borrower specific information, financing disclosure statements and closings are confidential, well filed, and stored according to the standards of the law.
- Gathers applicant financial status, credit, and property evaluation to determine feasibility of granting loan and approves or submits application to Underwriting Manager for approval.
- Collaborates with underwriters, processors, vendors, and other team members to ensure a smooth and timely loan approval process.
- Collaborate across departments by working with internal referral partners to help members reach their financial goals. Generates opportunities to promote products and service-usage to members, specifically HELOCs, checking, other consumer loans and Empeople Investment & Retirement Services.
- Conduct effective presentations to small and large groups of members and prospects both in personal and virtually, as needed. This would include but is not limited to meetings at Realtors Offices, table events with Financial Wellness Managers, and First Time Home Buyer Seminars.
- Consistent follows-up with members who have received pre-qualifications and consults with them regarding questions and concerns and works to move them into processing.
- Maintain a high standard of member satisfaction and quality by ensuring timely and proactive member communication before, during, and after the loan process.
- Develops business referral network through marketing, cold calling, prospecting, and networking activities; participates in community efforts to promote home ownership through Empeople CU

- Study and understand the common financial problems, root causes, and solutions for a target segment of members.
- Establish relationships with members and co-develop financial game plans to address problems and objectives.
- Provide appropriate guidance, services, and products to keep members on track, serving as accountability partner, to meet their goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Of:
- Empeople products and services including report banking tools.
- Credit Union policies and procedures pertaining to Real Estate and Consumer loan products.
- Differences in products and services offered by other financial institutions to those offered by Empeople CU.
- Current secondary mortgage market and products.
- Consumer financial health needs.
- Operate software for sales and service delivery including CRM systems.
- Apply mathematical concepts such as logic, decimals, computation, statistics, and analysis.
- Use reasoning abilty to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- Manage a varying range of duties and responsibilities.
- Engage in roleplay scenarios and accept and implement coaching/feedback.
- Identify additional business opportunities with real estate borrowers.
- Network and make presentations with partners in the real estate industry, to include realtors, and other lenders.
- Possess the confidence to make on-the-spot decisions while always having a positive attitude.

- Bachelor's degree in business or equivalent experience plus 2 years of verifiable success in a sales role.
