As a district that seeks to create a positive, welcoming culture for all students and staff members, the Public Schools of Brookline must create and support structures that lead to being a Culturally Competent and Responsive School District.
The Office of Educational Equity (OEE) will continue to support a districtwide educator team (Units A, B, and C) focused on increasing PSB’s goals of Joy in Learning, Excellence in Teaching, Culture of Collaboration, Celebration of Difference, Commitment to Equity, and Ethic of Wellness.

Equity Lead Role Description:
Facilitating equity means paying attention to historical and contemporary experiences of marginalization and how they manifest in our classrooms. The facilitator must ensure that participants feel supported while holding the group and individuals accountable. Much of what facilitators do to maintain healthy emotional space comes through in their intentional modeling.
Equity Lead Responsibilities:
- Complete the Zaretta Hammond PD and be a lead trainer at your school or schools throughout the district.
- Complete the Initiatives for Developing Equity & Achievement for Students - IDEAS I & II.
- Familiarize yourself with the Strategic Plan and additional data.
- Review and become familiar with New Solutions Middle School Review and New Teacher Center RTI & CST Review and Social Studies Audit.
- Assist in planning professional development opportunities.
- Provide Equitable Classroom tips/recommendations to classroom teachers - brief presentations can be given during principal meetings or sent electronically to staff.
- Participate in all Equity advisory meetings and report to the team on happenings at your school/district.
- Contribute to quarterly SMORE and Educational Equity WEB-Page.
Time and Dates:
Pre-Training (SY23-24) March-June:
- Four Hours of Pre-Training (Zoom and in-person) with OEE.
- Ten Hours of Pre-Training (Zoom and in-person) from March to June - Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by Zaretta Hammond.
(SY24-25)
OEE and Equity Lead monthly meetings from 3:30 - 4:30 (Zoom and in-person) from September to June, with an additional 30 hours of in-district or out-of-district training.
Compensation:
(SY23-24) Pre-Training - Educators will be compensated at the workshop participant rate of $41.51/hour.
(SY24-25) Each school's Equity Lead is for the 2024-2025 school year. This role is compensated with a $2000 stipend per person. *PD included in Stipend and subject to budget approval.
Selection:
Participants will be chosen from applicants focusing on balancing experience, each of our schools, and BEEP (Eight Elementary, Eight Middle, Four at the BHS, 2 BEEP).
