Job Description Summary

The Prosthetic and Orthotic Technician will complete fabrication and repair tasks for prosthetic, orthotic devices and equipment to department standards and timeliness.

Job Description

The Prosthetic and Orthotic Technician will:

  • Fabricates prosthetic and orthotic devices in coordination with clinical team to meet design objectives, quality standards, and clinical timelines.

  • Repairs and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices under the direct supervision of a licensed clinician.

  • Prepares casts and negative impressions to create positive models.

  • Creates positive models in plaster, alginate, duplicating foam, wax, silicone and other materials as required

  • Creates digital models using laser data acquisition tools available through CAD

  • Performs thermoset laminations.

  • Performs basic bench alignment of prostheses and orthoses of all levels.

  • Performs device alignment transfers using vertical transfer stations.

  • Creates temporary device mock ups.

  • Performs routine maintenance on fabrication equipment.

  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.


Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Associate Director, Prosthetics and Orthotics


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Associate's degree in Prosthetics/Orthotics technology or a related health sciences field; or a minimum of 2 years experience in orthotic/prosthetic fabrication.

  • Successful completion of the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics technician exam preferred.

  • Working knowledge of prosthetic and orthotic industry equipment and materials including power equipment, hand tools, ovens, vacuum forming equipment, materials and basic computer application skills.

  • Ability to multi-task while managing tight deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications: intermediate level skills in the use of Outlook, Word, and Excel; basic level skills in the use of PowerPoint.

  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with employees, clinicians, and other SRAlab system-wide staff.

  • Ability to lift or move large, heavy objects, specifically plaster positive models and materials.


Working Conditions

  • Some exposure to chemicals and material fumes / dust

  • Some exposure to infectious diseases when working or transferring patients

  • Patient care and technical work at floor, clinical bed and chair level in a variety of settings

  • Operates across the SRALAB continuum of care and its locations, including outpatient sites, day rehabilitation sites, inpatient units and on-call as necessary or required by the department.
