As part of the Surgical team at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, you’ll give direct inpatient nursing care as per the California Nurse Practice Act, and in support of the mission of the Patient Care Services Division. Being a Hoag Clinical Nurse I means serving our community by using research and evidence-based outcomes, and collaborating with members of your team to offer the highest level of care to those who depend on us.

Inside Hoag’s Surgical Department:

Our Surgical floor features 33 beds, with three levels of care and a nurse to patient ratio dependent on each level, ranging from 1:3 to 1:5. You’ll be serving adult and geriatric patients with cardiac medical and/or cardiac surgical diagnoses, including: colon surgery, thoracotomies, endarterectomies, jaw surgery and various other surgical patients. This will also include Telemetry admits along with overflow patients from other medical/surgical units.

As the Registered Nurse you may also care for patients requiring the following interventions:

  • Endotracheal intubation, ventilatory support, invasive pressure monitoring (including arterial, pulmonary artery, central venous pressure and left atrial), tracheostomies, thrombolytic therapy, cardioversions, hemofiltration, peritoneal dialysis, atrial and ventricular overdrive pacing, intra-aortic balloon pumping, insertion of pulmonary artery and transvenous pacing catheters, chest tubes, pericardial catheters, arterial lines, bronchoscopy and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).

Other duties may include:

  • Initiating IV therapy.
  • Demonstrating skill in the use of equipment and devices pertinent to treatment, procedures and practices.
  • Responding to emergency situations.
  • Following Standard Precautions, and specific isolation precautions for the prevention and spread of bloodborne pathogens and other communicable diseases.
  • Assessing the patient's educational ability/level and incorporating available educational material into patient/significant other teaching and documenting understanding in the patient record.
  • Providing ongoing assessment of the nutritional status for the patient, implementing dietary consultation when indicated to provide/maintain adequate nutritional intake, and communicating nutritional needs/problems to the physician.

Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
  • Completion of an EKG course or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of recent acute hospital experience.
  • Successful completion of Critical Care Course prior to assuming care of patients in critical care areas.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you haven't obtained a BSN upon hire, you will be asked to begin a BSN program within one year of the hire date and obtain your BSN within two years of starting the program.

Preferred:

  • BSN.
