Job Description Name: Physician Assistant I- BWH Orthopedic Surgery

JOB SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)

  1. Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  2. Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  3. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  4. Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  5. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
  6. Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  7. Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.
  9. Complies with all policies and standards.

ADDENDUM:

The Physician Assistant in the BWH Department of Orthopedic Surgery will work with several orthopedic surgeons as well as various fellows and residents in the Trauma Division. This role will primarily be to cover ambulatory side of practice/division. Time may be divided between the inpatient setting, outpatient clinic, operating room, and administrative tasks for patient care.

While the PA can expect a relatively predictable work schedule planned in advance whenever possible, scheduling variations may occur in order to cover clinical needs as they become apparent to the department/division/clinic. The PA may be asked to assist with coverage for other physicians, primarily within their division. Permanent adjustments to work schedule/location/type may occur as needs of department change over time. Additionally, the PA may cover various ambulatory clinic sites, surgicenters, and hospitals which may change over time based on need.

The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy.

The PA in orthopedic surgery must have the ability to work in a high stress clinical environment and must be able to take direction well. The PA should demonstrate good ethical judgement and be a team player.

Work will require exposure to radiation, needles and other sharps, and possibly surgical cement. Prolonged standing and fast-paced environment can be expected. Will require travel to multiple work sites.

Massachusetts Controlled Substance Certificate, DEA licensure, and NCCPA certification required.

Must complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years according to national and state regulations.

BLS and ACLS certification are required upon hire/at initial appointment. Thereafter the PA must maintain BLS certification, but ACLS certification is optional.

PA I

The PA I may precept PA students after 2 years of PA experience and 1 year of orthopedic experience.

The PA I may take PA shadow requests per hospital and department guidelines after 1 year of PA experience.
