CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: CORRECTIONS DETAIL OFFICER SOLID WASTE
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide general safety and security of officers, inmates and the general public during an assigned shift. Trains inmates on specified work duty and monitors activity on the work detail.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position and are a representative sample. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Position assignments may vary. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Conducts routine security inspections throughout the shift; takes head counts throughout the shift; acts on emergency situations following established protocol; breaks up fights among inmates.
Provides supervision of inmates while monitoring inmate activity on work detail; observes physical condition of inmates; and maintains secure environment for inmate detail.
Responds to telephone and radio calls and carries out tasks assigned throughout the department.
Completes duty and incident reports.
Operates a personal computer, copier, fax machine, phone system, communication system, and other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the possible use of word processing, database, or other system software.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent with one to three years' experience as an officer in a correctional institute and knowledge of the daily operations and security matters at a correctional facility; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and have the ability to obtain POST certification from the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Human Interaction : Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude : Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude : Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning : Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability : Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
S e nsory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors : Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
