POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides support to the higher education practice attorneys and marketing professionals to build a national higher education practice.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Reports directly to the Chief Marketing Officer who will oversee overall performance, development and provide day-to-day guidance. There will also be a dotted line reporting relationship to the higher education practice management team leaders for guidance and oversight on specific-practice related initiatives and administration. Works closely with Marketing Department staff.

Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Development and Marketing:

  1. Develop relationships with regional and national higher education professional organizations
  2. Work with practice management and marketing to establish and execute strategic marketing plans for the practice and individual attorneys
  3. Develop prospective client list and coordinate prospect visits and business development opportunities
  4. Build and maintain relationships with higher education institution decision makers, in both client and prospect institutions, identify legal and business opportunities for firm
  5. Coordinate firm attendance and sponsorship at higher education professional organization conferences
  6. Prepare and track higher education legal rankings
  7. Prepare responses to Requests for Proposals and pitch materials for higher education opportunities
  8. Coordinate higher education presentations, events, publications, webinars, and white papers
  9. Collaborate with Marketing Department to develop and maintain practice content, and develop marketing, branding, advertising, and public relations strategies

Practice Management:

  1. Monitor practice development efforts at competitor firms
  2. Collaborate with practice management to refine, execute and report on the long-term strategic direction of the practice, including initiatives related to hiring, business development, professional development, technology and privacy.
  3. Work with Team Leader to organize and implement team meetings and practice retreats
  4. Coordinate with Attorney Recruiting to facilitate practice-specific attorney recruiting
  5. Work closely with the Professional Development team to identify developmental gaps and implement various training programs
  6. Identify and facilitate external professional development activities for higher education attorneys
  7. Collaborate with firm marketing and business development team to develop and manage annual budget and priorities
  8. Track and report key performance indicators for the higher education practice, including, but not limited to, revenue, hours billed, new clients, new matters, new business opportunities
  9. Perform a variety of administrative tasks and provide general administrative support as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education: Master's degree in business, education, public administration, or related field required. Terminal degree is preferred.

Work Experience: Ten years of professional work experience required. Legal or other professional services business development experience and higher education experience strongly preferred.

Preferred: An entrepreneurial mindset, with proven experience and success in higher education and/or business development. Strong project management and organizational skills with high attention to detail required. Strong interpersonal, consensus-building, and teamwork skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to preserve confidentiality and exercise discretion with a high degree of professionalism. Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and priorities.

JOB STATUS: This is a full-time, exempt position. Work after hours or on weekends may be occasionally expected or required. 25% - 50% travel expected.

LOCATION : Position may be resident in one of Steptoe & Johnson's West Virginia (Bridgeport, Charleston, Huntington, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Wheeling), Ohio (Columbus), Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), Pennsylvania (Meadville, Southpointe, Pittsburgh), Kentucky (Louisville, Lexington), or Texas (The Woodlands, Dallas, Collin County, San Antonio) offices. For the right person, the position could be located anywhere and/or a resident.
