Assistant Professor (Series II) Online Master of Science in Biotechnology

This position is responsible for teaching courses in Biotechnology and/or Bioentrepreneurship as well as planning, advising students, scholarly work and working with the program director for the Master of Biotechnology (MSBT) program. The faculty will teach 6-8 classes per year, monitor student progress, serve as student advisor, develop relationships with industry partners to increase opportunities for students, present scholarly work and work with program director and other staff for curriculum development and other committees as outlined.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Developing their own independent, yet collaborative, research program in Bioentrepreneurship and/or Biotechnology.
- Contribute to the formation, enforcement and tracking of policies that impact student outcomes and learning.
- Assist in curriculum development for the Online MSBT Program.
- Assess plans, outcomes and learning objectives to provide the best and most relevant education to students.
- Work effectively and collaboratively with individuals/stakeholders to maintain and further develop Online MSBT program(s) and related combined degrees at MSM.
- Participate in administrative activities of Assessment & Operations.
- Assist in the development of course content, other curricular materials used for instruction and benefit of MSM students.
- Submit requested information in a timely manner to support administrative and/or accreditation requirements.
Expectations for Instructional Faculty for Online Courses:
- Manage the online course:
- Post a welcome message and introduction prior to or within the first 24 hours of the course. Encourage students to post welcome statements to each other.
- Conduct a minimum of 8 regularly scheduled office hours per week.
- Submit attendance by the following Monday for each week.
- Demonstrate clear understanding of the Online Attendance Policy.
- Contact students and the Program Director and follow up with those who may be experiencing individual issues around attendance or performance.
- Teach and facilitate the courses:
- Teach the assigned course in accordance with learning objectives and session plan outlines.
- Deliver learner-centered instruction through online delivery mechanisms.
- Promote discussion board participation by posting substantial responses to select student postings at least three different days per week.
- Respond to all student communications within one business day.
- Post announcements relevant to upcoming activities.
- Assess student learning:
- Adhere to all rubrics to assess student learning.
- Submit grades 5 business days after due date in the online grade book.
- Grade all final assignments and submit final course grades by Wednesday after the end of the term.
- Stay engaged in the course with any students who have been granted course extensions.
- Research and Partnership building:
- Work with students in helping to build and submit for conferences.
- Build relationships within the biotech space that will help students leverage opportunities.
- Create awareness of the current program through relationships and partnerships.
- Produce scholarly work in the field of biotech and/or bio entrepreneurship.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- PhD or equivalent degree in a related field (Biotechnology or another related scientific field).
- Experience in teaching online courses is highly preferred.
- Experience with STEM pipeline and graduate education grant writing is highly preferred.
- Past experience working in biotech is recommended.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of graduate course development, planning, and evaluation.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related institutional policies and procedures.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Skill in managing a variety of tasks simultaneously with competing deadlines.
- Skill in working independently and with minimum supervision.
