This position performs a variety of activities and equipment operation in the construction, maintenance, and general services related to storm drain cleaning, stormwater inlet maintenance and inspection, detention pond maintenance and drainage channel maintenance. May be required to work on call during inclement weather and storm events.
Drainage Technician I: Entry level position.
Drainage Technician II: Performs semi-skilled to skilled tasks. Drainage Technician III: Journey level position.
Drainage Lead: Senior level position.
The schedule for this position is typically 7:00am-3:30pm Monday through Friday. Summer hours are 6:30am-5:00pm Monday through Thursday. You may be required to work after hours assisting with snow plow operations, water breaks, or sewer backups. This may include being assigned on-call duty.
JOB SUMMARY
Involved in all aspects of stormwater system maintenance and repair including cleaning, repairing and inspecting stormwater inlets, channels, drainages, streams and detention ponds.
Participate in cleaning and removal of obstructions from stormwater inlets and lines; remove sediment from detention ponds, clear pond outlets and water quality structures.
Trim and remove trees and root systems and clear growth and debris in drainage channels and streams. Inspect and test stormwater lines for illicit connections and discharges.
Operate and perform routine maintenance to construction equipment such as backhoe, dump trucks, front end loaders, sweepers, vac truck, chipper and power tools such as compressors, jack hammers, chain saws, sandblasters, and concrete saws.
General construction maintenance, routine facility, and vehicle maintenance as necessary.
May be assigned "on-call" duty during inclement weather to assist with clearing inlets and channels during heavy rains, assisting with snow plow operations and other duties as assigned to assist the public works department.
Additional Duties
Drainage Technician Lead
Plans daily activities of division, assigns work, and oversees activities of crews in the field. Assists with the capital improvement program and administration of the private storm enforcement program.
In absence of Stormwater Supervisor carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).

Prior related experience preferred.
  • Drainage Technician II
Minimum 3 years related experience.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Dump truck, vac trailer, loader, skidsteer, and Polaris w/ mower and/or chipper.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Tripod system, gas monitor, desktop/laptop, IPad, OMS, Arc Map, and push camera.
  • Drainage Technician III
Minimum 6 years related experience.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Dump truck, vac trailer, loader, skidsteer, Polaris w/ mower and/or chipper, backhoe/trackhoe, and utilities vac truck.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Tripod system, gas monitor, desktop/laptop, IPad, OMS, Arc Map, push camera, and GPS.
  • Drainage Lead
Minimum 8 years related experience. Completed APWA Leadership course.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Dump truck, vac trailer, loader, skidsteer, Polaris w/ mower and/or chipper, backhoe/trackhoe, utilities vac truck, and camera van.
Prerequisite equipment proficiencies: Tripod system, gas monitor, desktop/laptop, IPad, OMS, Arc Map, push camera, GPS, and Wincan software.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Drainage Technician I
Class A CDL with tanker within 6 months of hire.
  • Drainage Technician II
Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements required.
Flagger, Confined Space, Trenching and Excavation Certificate, BMP Inspector, and CIP Erosion and Sediment Certifications required.
Completed LTAP Safety in the Workplace and LTAP Drainage trainings.
  • Drainage Technician III
Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements required.
Flagger, Confined Space, Trenching and Excavation Certificate, BMP Inspector, and CIP Erosion and Sediment Certifications required.
Completed LTAP Safety in the Workplace, LTAP Drainage, LTAP Supervisor course, Traffic Control Supervisor, and Noxious Weed Recognition trainings.
  • Drainage Lead

Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements required.
Flagger, Confined Space, Trenching and Excavation Certificate, BMP Inspector, CIP Erosion and Sediment, and NASSCO Certifications required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of proper use of general construction tools and equipment; methods, techniques, and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of drainage pipe and/or concrete inlets; methods, techniques, and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in pipe and inlet cleaning.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Hand and power tools, pick-up truck, backhoe dump truck, loader, sweeper, and other light mechanical equipment as needed. Asphalt and concrete tools.
