As Staff Accountant, Here's What You'll Do:

The Staff Accountant is a key member of the Company’s finance team. The individual supports the Senior Director, Finance & Accounting for both CF Rail Services (CFRS) and Chicago Freight Car (CFC), and is responsible for the effective execution and control of designated facets of the Finance and Accounting functions. Key responsibilities include overseeing the accounts payable process, payment processing, fixed asset processing, accounts receivable, collections and other general accounting duties.


Accounts Payable:

  • Enter approved general A/P invoices through Intacct
  • Convert purchase order receipts to payables in Intacct
  • Reconcile credit card remittance through PNC ActivePay
  • Handle communications with vendors seeking payments and investigate delayed payments/approvals
  • Work with other departments on corrections to A/P bills – voids, reissues, reclass entries, duplicates, etc.
  • Void checks as needed
  • Analyze A/P processes for process improvement opportunities

Vendor, W9 Management and 1099 filings:

  • Identify and correct any vendor’s missing information
  • Verify existent vendor data as needed (IE-banking changes, name changes, etc.)
  • Mail out 1099s and file electronically by governmental due dates

Accounts Receivable:

  • Daily cash application and reconciliation for both Rail Business Units
  • Deposit checks daily via remote deposit
  • Collection inquiries to past due customers
  • Credit analysis for CFC – thoroughly review potential customers for credit worthiness and make recommendation to the credit committee. Monitor customers for change in D&B status.
  • CFC billing, including yearly billing for excess mileage/tank car equalization, manual invoices, import invoices and adjustments to Intacct
  • Responsible for all aspects related to car hire, excess mileage and tank car equalization
  • Monitor invoices inbox and handle all requests
  • Weekly collection reporting for both Rail Business Units
  • Work with sales and operations to resolve any customer disputes

Expense Reporting & Fixed Assets:

  • Reconcile expense report balances between credit card bills and expense reports submitted
  • Inquire employees about outstanding balances
  • Add, modify, dispose of fixed assets at CFRS in the FAS system
  • Reconcile FAS to Intacct on a monthly basis
  • Provide tax and audit reporting on fixed assets, as needed
  • Post depreciation monthly

General Accounting:

  • Reconcile revenue monthly between in-house software applications and Intacct
  • Reconcile subledgers to GL: A/R, A/P, Inventory, Fixed Assets for CFRS
  • Prepare requested data for auditors as needed
  • Assist with inventory records needs, physical inventory counts for CFRS
  • Understand the billing processes done at the shops at CFRS and assist with discrepancies
  • Act as a back up to the Senior Accountant
  • Set accruals monthly for payables or other items for CFRS

Here's What it Will Take to be Successful in This Role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance
  • Experience working in a large-scale ERP environment, preferably Intacct
  • 1-3 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to communicate concisely, but also analyze data as needed
  • Organized and dependable
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high sense of urgency
  • Ability to learn new concepts quickly
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment

Physical Demands:

This job operates in a professional environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets, printers, and fax machines.


Working Conditions:

This position will be based out of our office in Oak Brook, Illinois. Until the Company moves to Oak Brook in early 2026, this will temporarily work out of the office in Schaumburg, Illinois. This role also offers remote work flexibility with 3 days in office, and 2 days remote.
