Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
Registration as either a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor or a Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist by the Louisiana Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.

Pursuant to Act 484 of the 2014 Legislative Session and effective May 1, 2015, Counselor Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors" (PLPCs) and MFT Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists" (PLMFTs).

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the Social Service Counselor job series by presence of recognition as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern or a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern by the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.
Differs from the Professional Counselor 2 by the absence of greater independence and more complex caseloads.
Examples of Work
Provide individual and group counseling to persons with a mental illness and/or an addiction using evidenced based practices which include, but are not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Interpersonal Processing Therapy (IPT). Maintain required documentation on all assigned cases.
Interviews clients with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), and/or addiction in order to assess concrete and situational or supportive counseling needs, strengths and vulnerabilities, and identify problems/needs to be addressed. Collaborates with the treating prescriber and multi-disciplinary treatment team. Provide clients and families with education regarding mental illness and/or addiction and discharge planning assistance for transition back into independent or supportive community living. Identify life areas of need and make appropriate referrals to ImCal programs and/or community agencies that best meet those needs. Keep informed and updated on community resources and make appropriate referrals to meet specific client needs.
Provides crisis intervention/assessment to clients who are suicidal, SPMI, co-occurring, addicted, homicidal, gravely disabled, or otherwise high risk. This involves assessment for hospitalization, collaboration with the prescriber, and the family, and linkage with community supports, i.e., inpatient treatment facilities, police, social services.
Communicate with various inpatient treatment facilities, court systems, DCFS, DHH attorney, mental health advocate, clients, and family members to ensure continuity of care for clients.
Attend clinical staff meetings and individual supervision as needed. Attend in-house and outside training as required. Provide presentations/in-service training to staff, as requested.
Accept and perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor, necessary for the smooth operation of the clinic.
