Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - Senior Principal Architect

The Port Authority of NY & NJ Engineering is a diverse and award-winning national leader in innovative planning, design, and construction of the most critical links of regional and national transportation infrastructure spanning New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority is seeking a Senior Principal Architect. Reporting directly to the Chief Architect, the successful candidate will lead architectural design staff to deliver projects, ensure code compliance, and play a critical role to keep the region moving. The position will be located at 4 WTC in NY, NY.

Responsibilities

  1. Prepare and supervise preparation of code evaluations, QA/QC audits of consultant and in-house design documents, estimates and technical design details.
  2. Assist the Senior Design Executive team to develop technical scope for consultant work and perform technical reviews, as necessary.
  3. Ensure compliance of in-house and consultant work with Engineering Department’s CADD and BIM standards.
  4. Supervise staff with the preparation of planning, conceptual, design development and construction documentation for facility capital projects and programs, with special attention to graphic and model-making disciplines.
  5. Provide Design Services during Construction (Stage IV) including submittal reviews, response to RFIs, site visits, and preparation of Post Award Contract Changes as necessary on capital project assignments.
  6. Serve as a technical resource to other Principals and staff relative to their portfolio of projects including art, urban planning and design, and historic preservation specialties.
  7. Assist the SDE team in consultant selection process including preparation of Request for Proposal and technical guidelines.
  8. Maintain a portfolio of projects that includes special projects with complex technical and administrative challenges.
  9. Provide a wide range of Architectural services to the client departments including Aviation Redevelopment programs and Major Capital Programs.
  10. Ensure that the architectural portion of projects and efforts are on time and on budget. Work with the Chief Architect to resolve scope, budget or schedule issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A professional Bachelor’s degree in architecture from an accredited university or college.
  2. Registered Architect licensure in either the state of New York or New Jersey.
  3. In-depth understanding of all applicable codes, laws, and standards applicable to public space planning and design.
  4. A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in all phases of design, estimating, and field inspection for projects in the field of transportation planning and architecture for projects that may include airports, rail transit, light rail transit, bus terminals, ferry terminals, vehicular tunnels and toll plazas, open public space, mixed use transportation-based urban development, and non-public facilities that support the public infrastructure.
  5. Experience with managing a large, full-service staff of at least 5 architects in the production of transportation programs and projects through all phases of design and construction inspection.
  6. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications

  1. A professional Master’s Degree in Architecture.
  2. Registered Architect licensure in New York and New Jersey.
  3. Demonstrated experience in establishing project plans, setting priorities, coordinating activities, handling multiple tasks simultaneously and delegating tasks and responsibilities that are multi-faceted and complex.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, Primavera P6, SharePoint, eBuilder, SAP, Bluebeam Revu, PDPS and WinTrak.
  5. Superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and experience in problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution.
  6. Rapid adaptability to new information, continuous improvement, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; and track record of acting decisively and effectively under pressure.
  7. Thorough knowledge of engineering project delivery process including design and construction management, construction cost estimating and project budgeting and scheduling processes.
  8. Experience implementing sustainable design guidelines including LEED and Envision.
  9. Membership and active involvement in multiple professional organizations.
