The Arapahoe County Attorney's Office is seeking to fill an Assistant County Attorney I position. The Arapahoe County Attorney’s Office is a full service in-house public law firm that represents and advises the County and its elected officials, departments, and employees on a wide spectrum of legal matters. This position will be responsible for handling zoning and building code enforcement cases in state court and for assisting with other litigation matters and legal issues as needed. The person selected to fill this position will work with and learn from a collaborative and friendly team of local government attorneys with substantial expertise in their fields and have an opportunity to make a positive difference for the residents of the County.


Assistant County Attorney I

  1. Represents the County and/or its elected officials, departments, and employees in legal proceedings in state and federal court, and in administrative proceedings.
  2. Provides oral and written legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners, its elected officials, departments, employees, and boards.
  3. Drafts regulations, ordinances, and resolutions.
  4. Reviews proposed legislation that has a potential impact on the County.
  5. Conducts legal research on various topics.
  6. Independently investigates facts and reviews findings for substantiation.
  7. Attends Board of County Commissioner and other meetings.

Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  1. Knowledge of legal research techniques and ability to effectively and accurately conduct legal research on a wide range of topics.
  2. General knowledge of relevant legal principles applicable to local government practice.
  3. Ability to use a personal computer for e-mail, calendaring, word processing, and conducting legal research.
  4. Ability to investigate and process factual information effectively, and to apply legal rules to factual situations accurately.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  6. Ability to work effectively when faced with a high volume of work and multiple deadlines.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, elected officials, fellow employees, and the general public.

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Juris Doctorate Degree with license to practice law in Colorado.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  1. Local government law experience.
  2. Litigation experience.

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  1. Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  1. Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Spends 90% of the time sitting and 10% of the time either standing or walking.
  2. Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls, or pushes up to 20 lbs.
  3. Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs.
  4. Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls, and crouches while performing office or work duties.
